I have stabilized a lot of wood and usually my projects are turned. I know stable wood is hard but never had difficulty turning it. However, a new project I'm working on does no involve turning. I stabled a small piece of holly and was intending to shape it but a knife won't touch it. Tried using a rotary file in the drill press and that was very slow going. Tried using the belt sander and that was really slow.
I gave up. Now, I'll have to cut another piece from the mother hunk (nice piece of pure white holly, I'm hoarding) then cut and shape and, when finished, then stable it.
Yep, stabled wood is not for whittling.
