How to tell white Oak from Red Oak

I knew that oak was porous but did not know just how much red oak was this way.

Interesting... I knew that if you put a red oak bowl in a vacuum chuck, you can't get enough vacuum to hold it. At least with my Vacuum Chuck... I only have a shop vacuum set up on my vacuum chucks. I like the looks of a red oak bowl, but it is a bear to finish to make it water or air tight.

The story is that white oak was used for the floor boards of the pickup truck beds.
When did they change to all metal floors?

Chevys last year for wood beds was 1972.

That vid taught me a couple things about oak. One, I'm not the only one who can't tell the difference by looking at the wood. And, I never knew there was a significant difference between the two woods. Oak was oak. But, guess not. Interesting.
