There are big red woods left, but the really big giant trees are mostly tourist attractions. A portion of the old hi-way 101 in the north coast of ca. is designated " The Avenue of the Giants" it is a beautiful 30 mile drive that takes your breath away. Many years ago I was thru that area and stopped for a picnic lunch in the shade of the redwoods beside the road. I decided to walk further into the woods and discovered 100-200 feet from the road had all been logged off. They left a band of trees lining the road, hoping no one would notice I suppose. That was back in the day when environmental protestors were protesting the harvest of the trees. Now if you take that same walk into the woods the saplings that were replanted have grown and it's beautiful again, but not with giants. My wife and I go to a favorite resort in the area so are there every 2-3 years.
I have two 8/4x8x6ft redwood boards with burl figure that are waiting for inspiration. I also have two 80 ft redwood trees that shade a house I have on city lot. They are suffering for lack of water now.
