California lumberjacks working on Redwoods

We saw them when we were on the tour the wood 2010. The most amazing thing is that most of them are siblings of the ones that first colonizers fell.

Just amazing. I can stare at images like this for ages.
Are there any trees like this left to see down California way?

In addition to the ones Paul linked to for Sequioas and Redwoods parks there are other big trees out there :D

Different species but there are some dandy trees on Vancouver Island as well:

Then just south across the border into WA: http://www.rainforestresort.com/spruce-tree.htm - we stopped here a couple of years ago and it is indeed a dandy.
plus some others in that park: http://rainforestgetaways.com/html/valley_of_rainforest_giants.html

Waaay further south - not actually a tree: http://www.americanforests.org/bigtree/jumping-cholla-cylindropuntia-fulgida-3/  I remember those things, what a PAIN especially with dogs.

Amusingly this is right near where i live: http://www.americanforests.org/bigtree/russianolive-elaeagnus-angustifolia-3/ Largest Russian Olive!
This is a decent cedar not to far away as well: http://www.americanforests.org/bigtree/incensecedar-calocedrus-decurrens-3/

There are big red woods left, but the really big giant trees are mostly tourist attractions. A portion of the old hi-way 101 in the north coast of ca. is designated " The Avenue of the Giants" it is a beautiful 30 mile drive that takes your breath away. Many years ago I was thru that area and stopped for a picnic lunch in the shade of the redwoods beside the road. I decided to walk further into the woods and discovered 100-200 feet from the road had all been logged off. They left a band of trees lining the road, hoping no one would notice I suppose. That was back in the day when environmental protestors were protesting the harvest of the trees. Now if you take that same walk into the woods the saplings that were replanted have grown and it's beautiful again, but not with giants. My wife and I go to a favorite resort in the area so are there every 2-3 years.

I have two 8/4x8x6ft redwood boards with burl figure that are waiting for inspiration. I also have two 80 ft redwood trees that shade a house I have on city lot. They are suffering for lack of water now.

Big Oaks in Louisana

We toured the Oak Alley Plantation in Louisiana while on vacation last week. The front yard walkway is lined with large 300 year old oak trees. I'm even drinking a mint julip. The largest one had a 30' perimeter. 1009151047.jpg
