I usually don't keep up with boxing or UFC fighting, but tonight's UFC Bantamweight female Championship bout held my interest because a local hometown girl was the heavy underdog (50 to 1 odds) to unseat the undefeated champion. Also, the champion was a cocky loudmouth, whereas the local girl was relatively respectful and polite toward her opponent. Turns out, Holly Holm unleashed some pretty serious fury on the champ, and won the title about a minute into the second round. If Rhonda Rousey went to Melbourne looking for a fight, she sure got one tonight.
One of my nephews was good friends with Holly's brother in high school, and Holly was a year behind my nephew, so they knew each other. She was famous in high school for being the first (and I think still the only) female kicker on the varsity football team. She was also the first (and only) girl to accept the Homecoming Queen crown while wearing a football uniform.
