I picked this little PEC square up a while back, probably due to someone mentioning it somewhere (although I can't remember who or where):

The price appears to be at near an all time high so I might consider waiting for it to drop back down..

I have to say that its an absolute gem. Its my go to tool for all sorts of things at this point. The layout lines are accurate to within my ability to measure them with any of my other tools (micrometers) and its square to as square as I can check square. Its just the right size for small layout and line transfers. It checks dovetail and other joinery cuts as being square as nicely as anything else I've got (and better than most)[1]. It works a champ as a small depth gauge.

Overall its just a super handy little measuring tool. Sometimes smaller is better.

I've been tempted to add the sterling dovetail rule option for it, that would allow checking narrow gaps for square easier. In practice it works pretty well by just tilting the blade and I'm not sure that adding this wouldn't be just adding to my metrology tooling obsession for minimal value.

Couldn't agree more. They're under 20 bucks at Harry j Epstein right now.

Wow that's a steal! That puts it right in stocking stuffer territory!

I really didn't need to know about that place

Links for the lazy - it appears they have both the 4" and the 6" - I have a (few) 6" square(s) and imho I'd say stick with the 4" for this one - its just the right size.

Re looked, I have the 4" and see the 6".........I thinks they may be getting some more from me, and Glenn, I think it was you that made me get the 4" originally :D

I used to go to the store on rare occasions back in to 70,s to early 80's when I lived in KC area.. Great place to browse if it hasn't changed.. It was basically just north of Bartle Hall which sits south of 12th street if I remember correct.. A lot of the mechanics at the TWA overhaul base used to buy a lot of their wrenches there back in the day..

Ha! I didn't realize that anyone at Epstein's was capable of running a computer. I used to go up there weekly as it was only a half block from my work. You could browse the isles and look at the tools, but there were no prices on anything. Then one day after asking for the price of something I realized they were written backwards on the shelf labels. All the checkouts/receipts were on a written note pads. Lots of military surplus there too.
