...here are a few recent sketches. Some of you folks should build these.

Here's coffee table from Italy in the early 60s. The panels are loose so they can be rearranged.


Another coffee table from around 1960. This time from Sweden.
 
Ted, I think that joinery is interesting, too. It's really not very complicated, either.

Bill, you could even strain your pasta through that Italian table. :D
 
Hmm, with only a small change on the Italian table you could make it a no-glue knock down piece. If either the end or side stretchers where made with tusk tenons into mortices in the legs I think it would all self lock. That looses some of the symmetry of the original design but is interesting from another angle.

The overlapping fingers on the swedish piece are also intriguing...
