I'm late to the party, but my advice is to cut it so the flat surface of the pot is not end grain. (Can't tell from the pics if that's what you ended up with or not.) Putting it in end grain orientation will make it harder to get clean cuts with your tools, and also make for a weaker pot that's not as resonant. That's sure some pretty spalting in that wood.
