I haven't posted in a while but I still occasionally get out to one of the lathes as I get orders ... these have either been delivered or on their way to new homes.

Long Click Pens are my favorite and the only ones I've never had a failure with.

Rescued from my friends firewood box. Cherry? with an Elegant Beauty.

And every time I turn plastic I'm reminded how much more I like doing timber products.

The olive and the unknown ?cherry are really stand out grain pieces of wood. That's a pretty good firebox save! I dig the titanium as well, that's some pretty cool looking plastic (fuzzy curls aside :)).

Great batch of pens, Ron. The birch burl and cherry? sure are sweet. I also really like those honeycomb acrylic barrels. :thumb:

Those are really nice! My favorite is the Bethlehem Olive Wood dressed on Gold Titanium one. That really is nice upon nice to me. Great job. Plastic makes a mess, eh? Think I'll stick to wood.

Thank you. That piece of BOW was the last I had of 50 blanks and the worst looking of the lot. Had to use it before ordering more from Israel

The mystery wood I'm just guessing is cherry but I don't know. I'm going to guess his scrap wood box wood is roughly 5' square by 4' deep and it was over half full of BEB scrapes when I was there last week.

He takes the scrap wood and chips it and he has made a very large machine to make them into pellets for his stove in the shop.

Well chipping the mystery wood for burning would have been a straight up crime imho. Whatever it is, its some darn pretty stuff. Would have been interesting veneer as well.

Just as a side FYI there are a few folks selling domestic olive as well, I know the BOW has some cachet that can make it sell better though. One I know of is https://farwestforest.com/?s=olive&s_cs=true (I see they also have pistachio blanks, https://farwestforest.com/shop/pistachio-wood-pen-blanks-p104/ I've only turned one piece of pistachio in bowl form but it was a real pleasure to turn so if you decide to get anything I'd be tempted to try those as well).

My cousin in OR sells some olive as well (I think it might be from the same trees actually.. not 100% sure) - https://picasaweb.google.com/107160764356058290529/OliveBurlsAndSlabs contact http://www.highwestwood.com/ most of the olive he has is older stuff and in larger slabs but he's generally willing to cut some up if you give him a holler, last time I was down he had quite a few pallets of pistachio fret board blanks that would be about right for slimlines and lots of BLM and myrtle pieces but mostly larger stuff.

I have a good sized olive cutting board slab I need to do something with from the same area (from Irwins pile) and I can say the grain on it is just outstanding. Not saying they'll all be that nice but the wood looks similar.

Les, et all, thanks for the nice comments, thanks

Those scraps are just what they are scrapes. I don't have any idea how many logs he has all over his property but what he mainly does is cut up turning stock and the scraps ... will he heats his business in the winter with a wood burning stove.

I've seen some of that olive wood and it is nice. I've run across a few piece of Italian Olive wood burl in cutiing boards that is outstanding. Somewhere in my garage I have some really nice pistachio that came up from AZ a few years ago. When we attempt to clean the garage this week before my surgery I'll see if I can find a piece.

As long as it nice the origin for the most part doesn't faze me.

Here is a few of the things he's made from reclaimed trees and the carving is done by his wife.

Last November we had some devastating 100 mph winds rip through the region and we had thousands of trees down all over the place. Here's is a piece of Blue Pine he turned into a lamp

And here is some White Birch vases, lamps and lamp shades drying waiting to be finished. All from reclaimed trees.

I admit to having the occasional bad case of can't-get-rid-of-it-itis which makes burning wood that I should a bit of a challenge.

The reclaimed and mostly free wood is certainly the way to go when you can get it, looks like you're friend is deeply immersed in that theory as well :D. Some nice looking stuff there, I really like the clean look of the birch pieces and that blue pine is pretty special as well. A couple of the vase shapes are about as nice as you'd see in my opinion, he has a real good eye.

I've been wanting to do a lamp for a while but the size has spooked me of. For some reasons I hadn't thought of a smaller shape like that, I like it a lot as well and it looks about half doable. Added to the mental folder.

Thanks for sharing the pictures, neat stuff.
