It actually not only makes the paint mask stick less, but if you do get any paint slop outside of the vcarve, you can easily scrape away the slop with a knife off the base finish.
Here's the final piece.
Did notice one issue afterwards, I carved it up side down. But ended up using one of my beehive hangers for mounting it, which will make it much easier for my daughter to hang it.
Applying wax sounds like a good option, too. I'll have to try that.
