cleaned up the posts, and trimmed them to length, and ripped the side rails to width, and trimmed to length. also did a quick setup to get an idea of the size.

finally got all of the boards planed down to the same thickness. then i decided to do layouts of the head and foot boards. i may do the half lap, and mortise and tenon work now that the temps are dropping (and i got a bite to eat, and a nap).

cut the mortises in the grid parts today. one more set to be done after i get the new, longer hold down bolts for the mortising machine's riser. that last set was in the bottom board of the foot board (also laid out the curve in that one, to be cut after the mortises are done). with the last ones done, i can then measure, and lay out the half laps for the rest of the grids.

picked up the longer bolts (those too turned out to be metric, grr...) the other day, and today, i put the riser in place, and cut the last of the mortises. tomorrow it will be cutting the tenons on the long parts, then fitting out the half laps on the other parts.

got more out of the way today. cut all of the tenons on the horizontal parts, and cut the long arc on the bottom board of the footboard. with that done, did a test setup of both the head and footboards. tomorrow, the vertical parts and chamfering the tops and bottoms of the posts.

on saturday, i glued up a sled to use for cutting the half laps. did the chamfering of the posts yesterday, and worked up the layout for the half laps. felt kind of iffy while cutting the tenons for all of the thin vertical parts (14). finished those up, and decided to call it a day. definitely feeling a bit off, and didn't want to make any mistakes that would cost me lumber or fingers.

got the headboard out of the way today. fixed the one upright that got messed up, and cut all of the half laps involved while i still had the table saw set up for cutting the half laps for the footboard. assembled the bottom grid first, then the top one. then combined the two, and put the whole thing together. just have to take about 4 inches off the end of the supports, glue and screw them to the side rails. then all that is left is to add the hardware to connect the side rails to the head and footboards. also snuck in a couple of pics of the whole setup too.

now i can say that the construction phase of the bed is now finished. after a quick check with lee valley about the bed rail hardware, it was off to the races. got the hardware attached, and then did the set up. all i can say about this type of rail hardware is, wow! solid as a rock. now to take it apart, and start the finishing process.

as i needed to bring the bed home to finish it, and gain a bit of space in the shop for working on the dresser and magazine rack, i brought it home and set it up. it sits up a bit higher than we're used to, but that shouldn't be a problem. the only problem that came up, was that the full size mattress and box spring that my brother bought years ago, and gave to us, was a bit smaller than the industry standard. the industry standard for a full size is 55 inches wide, this one only came out to 52 1/2 inches.
