....in the firewood pile today.
This stuff has turned up before, curly maple, proudly cut to 16" and delivered, after which I had a sharp discussion with our supplier. I think it's time to take another walk in his woods to see if we can spot any more. The bark was quite distinctive. Tree length logs would be nice.

It's been cut for a while, so there's some checking, but I'll put some end sealer on there to try and arrest that process.

You say this is Maple? I would be interested in what species. If it is sugar maple then it is possible this is a "defect" called "nickel eye maple". Rare to my knowledge and usually brings a premium $ in the log. I know of only a few logs ever logged in Michigan with that figure. Veneer buyer's get in fights trying to buy it. I know of a logger who made about $250,000 on one sale of birdseye maple that included a few of those logs. Those logs were from a remote area along lake Superior about 18 miles back in on newly made logging roads.
