A little weekend woodworking project

Jan wanted a little something to give the front of the house a little more 'depth'. Admittedly, the house is just a plain box. She scours design magazines and catalogs for ideas and cuts out pictures for a scrapbook. Hence my never ending honey-do list.

This was a rather simple design for over the front door. There is a beefed up version coming (probably next spring) for over the garage door.

Simple construction from 2x lumber. Attaching to the house was the only challenge. I really did not want to cut into the siding and deal with "J" channel, etc. rather I scribed the siding onto a piece of poster board and used that as a pattern to cut some 2x4 to follow the siding. As the siding that this is attached to is very short, and I verified that there was plenty of expansion space at the opposite end, I had no qualms about screwing through it. Just have to plug a few screw holes and touch up the paint.

I was a little restricted because of the low roofline in relationship to the door, so it might seem a bit low, but it think putting it much higher may have put it too close to the soffit.

Thanks to all. Jan is very happy with the outcome and that is all that really matters.

btw, there is some strange guy peeking out the window in the third picture....

I see from the last picture that you haven't run the 240v~ to the shop yet.

Keen eyes, both of you. Still running on the original 30a 240v supply. As soon as budget or my own confidence allows I will run the new cable to the main panel and upgrade to either 60a or 100a service.

If you have 200 amp service to the house, I'd go with the 100 amp sub. It'll only cost a few dollars more than the 60, and will have more breaker slots to allow for more splitting of circuits. If only 100 amp service to the house, go with the 60.

Rennie, that looks great!
I, fool that I am, would've argued that it doesn't keep the rain off....

Really fine work there, sir. And excellent relationship management too.
