Actually, it is an Italian word for a serving of finger foods consisting of cheeses, meats, bread and other deli goodies. This is generally served on a flat board called, not surprisingly, a "charcuterie board".
Wife wanted it to be gift, laden with great goodies sold at an Italian deli/winery she works at part time.
As can be seen, it is basically a cutting board but of thinner wood to keep weight down. Same idea is not limited to Italians. Can also be a sushi board or just French cheese board.
Mine is made of walnut and oak wood from my "don't throw that out, I might be able to use it for something some day" bin. Simple project but gave me a great sense of satisfaction getting back into the shop after more than 13 months.
(now, with fingers crossed, hope pic will upload)
