chess board

Luke has decided to enter a few things in the local fair through 4H. He turned a couple of birdhouse ornaments that I forgot to take pictures of and is working on a chess board to go with the chess pieces he turned in shop last year. The board is some Michigan walnut and spalted maple we cut a couple of years ago. The case is from a piece of sassafras that I've had probably four years kicking around. I've given some guidance and used the router table to cut the rabbet for the top. He doesn't care for the router much! If you ever get a chance to use sassafras jump on it! It ages to a nice medium brown and works like butter!
