At the end of each month, I have posted some statistics. The April statistics can be found in the thread:
http://familywoodworking.org/forums/showthread.php?t=3614.

I hasten to add that these statistics are not in any way “official’. I gathered them using queries that anyone, even a guest, could formulate.

notes:

(a) ‘Members’ excludes anyone who has registered for three or more months but has never posted, anyone who has not posted within the last four months, and “dummy” members set up for test purposes.

(b) ‘Members with 5 or More Posts’ excludes anyone who has no posts within the last three months.

Interesting. I wonder what happened on the 10th and 23rd to cause the large loss in membership???
Greg was grumpy and he nuked a bunch of folks. Just kidding...the only "members" that are deleted are new registrants who sign up using a handle instead of real first and last names. They get auto-declined and an e-mail explaining the rule.

Back to your question, I thought it might be surges in people signing up three months ago on those days, with some number of them having not yet posted. But...I just checked the registration stats for that time period and saw no corollary. Just for fun, here's a snapshot showing the raw registrations since the first of the year. (By the way, the options to change the date are not functional. This is just a capture of the page, disconnected completely from the actual vBulletin Admin Control Panel.)

Frank's stats are pretty enlightening. There seems to be a slight decline in the number of people participating, although the raw member count continues to rise steadily. I suspect there are about equal numbers of participants compared to those who just read and don't post. We do continue to build up more content (new threads), and as we do that, there will be more opportunities for new folks to chime in.

It isn't that folks have left, rather it is that they never participated. So, the (arbitrary) algorithm that I am using to count members does not include anyone who has been a member for three months but has never posted. The likely cause of the drop is that three months and a day previously a large number of folks joined up but many of them never subsequently posted.
