So I'm channel surfing the radio driving to work this morning and I come across a song I haven't heard in years - "King of the Road". I have memories of being maybe 5 or 6 and knowing every stupid lyric to that song and drove my parents bonkers singing along when it came on the car radio. So I get to thinking this morning what other songs that made an impression on me as a kid - enough to memorize all the words, sing along, and annoy all the grownups. I'm going to date myself, but here's a few that come to mind:

King of the Road
Danke Schoen
Boy Named Sue

I'm sure others will come to mind later.

So which ones haunted your family?

How about "Good Day Sunshine" by the Tremlos. The words to that one have been circling my brain for a couple days now. Another would be "Red Rubber Ball" I think that was the name of it, by the Asociations, IIRC. Those are the oldest I remember. I do remember the ones above too.

the ol` merle haggard song, we don`t smoke marijuana in muskogee...been stuck in my head since this mornin`.

Funny ... when i was little it was "Slip Slidin' Away" by Paul Simon and ... umm ... some other one of around the same era that I can't think of now ... lol

Just because you've become a young man now
There's still some things that you don't understand now
Before you ask some girl for her hand now
Keep your freedom for as long as you can now
My Momma Told me
You better shop around!

The Miracles

Trailer for sale or rent . . . LOML's daughter came up with a collection of about 160 New Wave tunes she thought I'd like. Now in 1982 I was working mid-shifts in a heavy-iron shop. That's a main frame computer room to regular folks. I'd listen to KROQ all night long.

It was frightening that I knew the name and artist on about 75% of the tunes, the name on about 90% and could sorta sing along with more than that . . . Pet Shop Boys, Haircut 100, Split Enz, Oingo Boingo, Yaz, Depeche Mode, Yello, etc., etc. . . . frightening.

And to think a dozen years before that it was Cream, Janis, Jimi, Quicksilver, King Crimson, Zappa, Floyd. Thank goodness my dad played Charlie Bird, Art Tatum, Bessie Smith, Earl Hines, etc. or I could've grown up warped . . . . Oh, darn.

Cats in the Cradle
by Harry Chapin

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

One of my all time favorites.
When this song first came out I would cry like a baby singing along with it.

That song makes me cry too. It's one of the primary reasons that ex-H and I aren't together any more!!!!!

How about
"Big Girls Don't Cry" - Four Seasons
"America" - Neil Diamond
and so many more that I can't think of them.

I'm compiling a list of "love songs" to be put on a CD for my hubby for our 25th anniversary - any suggestions? Remember, we are NOT spring chickens, nor do we like most of the 70s and 80s hard/metal "stuff" (for want of a better word;)).

I have dozens of songs stuck in my head but there’s one that whenever I hear it I just have to sing along….

Happy Together
by The Turtles

Imagine me and you I do
I think about you day and night
It's only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up invest a dime
And you say you belong to me
And ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be
So very fine
So happy together

I can see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life
Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together

I can see me lovin' nobody but you
For all my life
When you're with me baby the skies'll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice
It had to be
The only one for me is you
And you for me
So happy together
So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together

Thanks Doug, I'll probably have this rattling around my brain at 3AM…

Another favorite of LOML's and mine when we were courtin'

Johnny Cash & ?? (Don't remember the lady who sang with him -- His wife June ??)

(Johnny)
If I were a Carpenter
and you were a lady
would you marry me anyway
would you have my baby........

(Lady singer)
If you were a Carpenter
and I was a lady
I'd marry you anyway
I would you have your baby........

(Both)
Save your love through loneliness
Save your love through sorrow
I gave you my onlyness
give me your tomorrow

Makin' a livin' the old hard way
Takin' and givin' by day by day
I dig snow and rain and the bright sunshine
Draggin' The Line

My dog Sam eats purple flowers
Ain't got much, but what we got's ours
We dig snow and rain and the bright sunshine
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)

I feel fine, I'm talkin' 'bout peace of mind
I'm gonna take my time, I'm gettin' the good sign
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)

Lovin' the free and feelin spirit of
hugging a tree
when you get near it.
Diggin' snow and rain and the bright sunshine Draggin' The Line
(Draggin' The Line)
Draggin' The Line

and.....

Ah, now I don't hardly know her
But I think I could love her
Crimson and clover

Ah when she comes walking over
Now I've been waitin' to show her
Crimson and clover over and over

Yeah, my, my such a sweet thing
I wanna do everything
What a beautiful feeling
Crimson and clover over and over

Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over
Crimson and clover over and over

another favorite....

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and theyre all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens evry day
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then Ill fade away and not have to face the facts
Its not easy facin up when your whole world is black

No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
If I look hard enough into the settin sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin comes

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black

enough for now.

Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer

artist: nat king cole
-peak billboard position # 6 in 1963
-words by charles tobias and music by hans carste

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Just fill your basket full of sandwiches and weenies
Then lock the house up, now youre set
And on the beach youll see the girls in their bikinis
As cute as ever but they never get em wet

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Youll wish that summer could always be here

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

Dont hafta tell a girl and fella about a drive-in
Or some romantic moon it seems
Right from the moment that those lovers start arrivin
Youll see more kissin <wolf whistle> in the cars than on the screen

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Youll wish that summer could always be here

Youll wish that summer could always be here
Youll wish that summer could always be here

Saturday Morning Confusion

- Artist: Bobby Russell
- peak Billboard position # 28 in 1971
- Words and Music by Bobby Russell*

Here they come, warmin' up
I hear the pitter-patter of little people on the livin' room rug
Whoa is me! There goes the TV
Now it's Popeye and Pluto, Batman and Bozo
Don't spill the corn flakes, they'll break at lunch break
Home from the office, why did I stop to have a beer with the boys?
Now my head's 'bout to pop

It's a Saturday morning confusion
If you think you can sleep, it's illusion
'cause you'll probably get a rude intrusion from Harry the dog
Harry the dog is as big as can be
'n' Harry the dog had puppies last week
We couldn't tell if it's a he or a she, now we know

It's a Saturday morning confusion
If I could just get to the bathroom
And get a cold rag and an aspirin to help how I feel
But here come the twins and they're screamin' at me
What is the deal to turn off the TV?
"Go ask your mother and quietly, your daddy is ill"

There he is-Cousin Jack
You got the leaf rake, too, keep at it till I get it all back
Hangin' round my yard, snoopin' in my garage
I tolerate 'im because he's my cousin
He's nice to the kids and Harry just loves him!

It's a Saturday morning confusion
And if I could just hide in my attic
So I couldn't hear my wife yellin' "Take 'em all to the show"
I'll take the whole neighborhood to the show
I'll just walk out in back where the money-tree grows
Grab me a handful and off to the show we'll go

It's a Saturday morning confusion
And if I could just get a transfusion
Or maybe go hide in the bedroom till five o'clock
Let it be known that at five the TV
Is gonna be tuned to the Game Of the Week
And that goes for dogs and twins and the whole family

It's a Saturday morning confusion
It's a Saturday morning confusion day is done

Cousin Jack, in his yard cooking steaks on a grill that I'll never get back
The twins in front of the TV, Harry with his fam'ly
Sis on her date and Mom at the door smiles as she surveys the sight
For the first time today, the kingdom is quiet

LORD, LET US THANK YOU FOR SATURDAYS
AND MAY THEY REMAIN OUR FRIENDS!!
'cause I work all week long
Be strong till they're grown
And next Saturday then, we'll do it again

a- Here they come, warmin' up
I hear the pitter-patter of little people on the livin' room rug

FADE
Whoa is me! There goes the TV

Wow. Take the dog for a walk and come back to a boatload of replies. Almost forgot about Crimson and Clover. That was another one. Most of the ones I have the earliest memories of are ones from the stations dad used to have on. I didn't know there was anything better. Then he made the mistake of surfing through something that I wouldn't let him change. It turned out to be Jimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower, followed by Roundabout by Yes. After that it was all over for dad's stuff.
