Cherry - Shellac and then BLO?

I'm making a small cherry box. My sample with BLO shows the traditional blotchiness but I like the darker look of the BLO. Can I shellac to avoid the blotchiness (1lb cut) and still BLO afterwards? I'll run a test piece but thought I'd tap the infinite wisdom of our members.

Glenn, I think you can, but I've really liked the look of my small cherry boxes with a few coats of shellac, followed by one of wax. BLO over shellac is supposed to be just fine too, avoiding the splotches.

Post a picture when it's done please.

    Glenn,

IIRC one of the WW Mags. did an article on finishing cherry to avoid the blotchiness. I think they used a cherry gel stain, then did the traditional finish--shellac and top coat. The stain blended the blotch in with everything else. That's the one thing about cherry I dislike.

I tested the BLO after shellac. The blotchiness is gone but, the gain in color is pretty insignificant. I think I'll just go with shellac only and then wax. There'll be a thread when I'm done later this week.

    Thanks All.

Glenn, I think you'll be happy with shellac and wax. Let us know...
