Allen,
It has happened here. Luckily, most people here are veterans of other forums, and we've seen what can happen when it gets out of hand. I try not to mention the maker of my lathe and my bandsaw, just because some of my friends here are uncomfortable with it.
But brand loyalty is one of the things that really hurt american car makers, in the long run. They knew people *identified* with one brand or another, and they could slap their name on junk and those people would still buy it. You still see it on the tube: "this is our country, this is our truck." Sheesh!
What surprises me is how we become tools of the marketing machine. There are people who actually have loyalty to one brand of flavored sugar water over another, and self-identify with that brand. People will even *buy* hats advertizing some product, and wear them. It's the strangest thing...
Thanks,
Bill
Frank,
Thanks for letting me have a bit of fun... You do know that I, and I think all the member's here, enjoy your posts showing projects you do, and the tools you use to do them. Your deck project and cabin restoration using your Festool tools are two that come to mind, and I especially enjoyed. You show your "pride" in the tools without gloating, and give good information about why you believe they are one way or the other.

Maybe some feel somewhat about their tools as they do their spouses. They can bad mouth them, but nobody else should. Dunno
My favorite brand is old cast iron!
I see it in the other forums too! I can ofter just see the title of the thread and know where it is going to go.
God grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,
the good fortune to run into the ones I do,
and the eyesight to tell the difference.

Allen, I had to think a bit before posting a response. I'll jump in with some amateur psychology analysis. A lot of the members here are either professionals or master class wood workers/turners. Some, obviously, have the financial means to purchase whatever tool meets their personal wants and needs. When they make comments about the quality of a tool it is from that perspective. e.g. a comment about a compound sliding miter saw from one might have relevance once you find out that his saw gets, say, 20 hours use a month. But another poster (like me, maybe) uses his that much in a years time. Visiting Tod's shop is like stepping into another world for me. His tools are top quality and receive heavy use. He cannot afford slow, small tools. His business would bog down. For others, like myself, time spent in the shop is often reward enough. I simply have no need for his massive shaper or very large slider table saw. If his tools work productively and help him create beauty and profit, ye can bet the farm he will be product loyal to those tools. When I first joined this forum, I had an uneasy feeling that I would not stay long. And your question hits the point why. FW is top heavy with pros and masters and comments, as I said, are from that perspective. The hobbyist represents a tiny minority here. Once I understood that I was able to separate comments about high priced tools vs. the rest and not feel resentment. And, early on, I did feel considerable resentment. Many of my tools are Grizzly and there is much anti-Grizzly sentiment here. I am brand loyal to Griz tools for a variety of reasons that I have posted in the past. Among them, best value and quality for the dollar on the market (IMHO), great follow-up service and I can go to the store and pick up myself, saving shipping costs. More than you asked for, I'm sure. Probably more than you wanted. End of sermon.
