Am I the only one?

Man, I'm at a loss as to what's causing the weird behavior. Nothing has changed software-wise here for several weeks (that I know of), so I don't have any idea what might have made this start showing up.

Like Greg said, we'll bang on it and see what we can figure out. I can't do much on it tonight due to other commitments (my pool team got a wildcard spot in the playoffs, so I have to go shoot tonight), but we'll see what we can find.

I've got a fix!

I got home tonight and I don't see ANY images myself in firefox. But in IE the site looks fine. Then I went to the main fww logo in the upper left corner and got the URL to that image. When _I_ go to this:

http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/misc/vbulletin3_logo_white.gif

in either IE or Firefox, I get a permission denied error message. This is interesting to me, especially since i can see it when viewing the page in IE.

This got me thinking a little further, which is always dangerous. I have a special plugin in my firefox that refuses to send the Referer header by default unless I tell it to for a specific site. Well I added fww.org to that list and POOF! I see all the images again. There must have been a setting on the web server for blocking images from invalid referers somewhere that was recently changed because I've operated without sending the referer since the day I began visiting this place.

Well that has to be it, I recently activated the "HotLink Protection"

HotLink Protection
HotLink protection prevents other websites from directly linking to files (as specified below) on your website. Other sites will still be able to link to any file type that you don't specify below (ie. html files). An example of hotlinking would be using a <img> tag to display an image from your site from somewhere else on the net. The end result is that the other site is stealing your bandwidth. You should ensure that all sites that you wish to allow direct links from are in the list below. This system attempts add all sites it knows you own to the list, however you may need to add others.

The reason I did this was I was finding a considerable amount of our bandwidth was being sucked off for use on other sites, including things like our smilies, but not limited to just that, by activating the HotLink Protection it should stop us paying for smilies and other graphics being displayed on other people's forums.

I use Firefox exclusively, IE has just WAY too many security leaks in it, but I've not seen any of the problems that you guys are showing.

Cheers!

Well now that Stu has come clean with his changes, I feel a lot better.

Those of us paranoids can just adjust their appropriate security settings to allow for the changes.

I am almost finished with mine in ZoneAlarm that are similar to what Jason Beam was referring to in the FireFox addin.

Thanks Greg, Stu et al.

Ok ... this just happened to me yesterday ... ALL the other forums that I read work fine and I have not changed / updated / modified anything in my computer at all

OK, not THAT one certainly is Vaughn's fault  :D

Sometimes things just kind of go "POP" dunno why, but I seem stuff like that from time to time not just here, but on other vBulletin forums and other php forums.

Sorry, no answers :dunno:

ok, just trying something:

let's see if pasting an exterior image location still works... ;)

Thanks,

Bill

John, that is EXACTLY what I saw last night. FireFox isn't sending the referer and images are being blocked. Try going to this url:

http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/misc/vbulletin3_logo_white.gif

If you get "Permission Denied" - it's Stu's "Hotlink Protection" setting that's causing it. You'll have to find out where to get it to send the real referer to FWW to fix it. I'm not sure where that is on your machine - but I'd start with programs like Norton or ZoneAlarm or any of your "paranoia" software.

Ok .... the answer on my machine is that Stu's HotLink Protection doesn't like the "sendreferer" value to be anything other than "2". When I configure the sendreferer value to "0" or "1", so that I can use the crazedlist search engine properly, then I get a screwy GUI for FWW :D hehehe...

All is well here now and I can simply change the sendreferer value to "0" when I need to - not a big deal.

cheers eh?

I'm having no problems at all - using IE7 - I did get an error message yesterday that my "CPU usage had exceeded....." - I can't recall the whole message, but I just closed the tab, then reopened a new tab and FWW came right up. Think THAT problem was my computer - I had 7 tabs open!!

No the cpu issue was with bluehost, it happened several times yesterday, but seems to be ok now. Thanks for checking on the images.

With all security off, it works fine. It is identical to the last time this happened. Have added FWW to allowed links with no help. The security is reading it as being redirected and not willing to give that up.

Scott, I'm over at the L shop, working on a computer I've not used for about 3 weeks, and I just had the same problem. I rooted around in a few places for a while, turned off all of my security stuff, but I could not get it to work:huh:

I then looked at the version of FireFox I was using and found it to be rather old, I downloaded and installed Ver 3.0.3 and all is well.

What version of Firefox are you running?

Cheers!
