    ? on sound editing

Can any of our resident techies recommend a program (free would be nice) which can allow me to clip a segment out of an mp3? I'm looking to make my own ring-tone for my cell phone, and I figure a ring tone is just a short mp3, right/wrong? Thanks!

found tonethis 3.0 which has a free version (ad supported, but they're very mild) so now I'm loading up my phone with new ringtones. (stock ones were getting boring)

Ned, you might check out Audacity. Does some pretty cool stuff, and it's free.

I use a program called MP3 Maker 12 Deluxe. It is not free but is not that expensive either. Check out this website. http://www.magix.com/us/mp3-maker/detail/pr/
There is a built in feature in this program called Music Editor that will probably work for what you need. I have used the free Audacity that Vaughn mentioned, but I like MP3 Maker better. For me it was easier to learn.
