How much gap, if any, would you leave between the end of the tenon and the bottom of the mortise? I would like to keep the gap minimal – would the glue (Titebond) squeeze out without a gap? e.g., the fit was 1/1?

bruce, the mortise is open on one side.........it can`t go hydraulic on you...cut it as tight as you can get it and glue it up before the wood movestod

Thanks Tod. That was the answer I was hoping for.

I chamfer the edges of my tenons to account for any extra glue. I usually leave only a very slight gap 1/32 or so. Just enough so that I know the tenon is not bottoming out in the mortise.
