Faceplates

Looking at a bunch of your guys' pics on here and your pages, I've noticed some of you have some smaller faceplates (about 2inch) that have like 8 screw holes. I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could order faceplates that size?

I rarely use faceplates any more. I like to use face plate rings like this:

With faceplate ring, I can reverse turn without removing the faceplate immediately. I can still use the tailstock for support. I can flip the blank back and forth to refine the shape without any run out problem. As a bonus, I can leave the chuck on the lathe all the time. Sometimes flipping the blank gives you easier access.

Gordon,
Would you recommend this for large projects (say a 16" X 8" bowl)?

Thanks,
Kurt

Kurt,

I really have no idea. I enjoy turning in smaller scale.
I normally use the smallest of the 3. It is adequate for even off-center turning. The lathe vibrates before the ring comes loose.
The picture is the large ring which I have never used. The OW live center was for scale. The external diameter is 6.25". The ring is made out of steel; I assume you can drill extra holes for additional screws for security

Thanks Gordon,
I hadn't noticed the big one. At 6+" across, it must be intended for pretty large stuff.
Cheers,
Kurt
