Although my knowledge of sea things and vocabulary is rather limited, belaying pins were also used to inflinge certain punishment to indisciplined sailors.

As far as I know the rest of the crew formed a corridor through which the one who was going to be punished had to pass as many times as it had been ordered. While he was passing the rest of the crew battered him with belaying pins.

Another rather tough punisment was to be passed by the keel, few survived to that one.

Maybe Chuck can pinpoint some more of those "friendly" jokes.
