I have a Pecan log about 22" Diameter with a 7-8" diameter burl that protrudes 3-4" from the main trunk. My question is, how deep into the trunk should I go when I cut it out?

I think that looks more like a limb that was cut off and the bark regrew over the wound.

If it where a burl, I would say to have the burl at either 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock. The center circle is the pith and the straight lines are the chainsaw cuts.

Tony,
Many folks make the same mistake. I often see folks on ebay selling pieces like yours as burls even though they are not. They also try to sell wood with a little curl as a burl. Boy do they get nasty when I suggest they repost with correct info!
