Aparto II - 2012 Update

Hot water to a washing machine, what do you think this is the Trump Plaza

We very RARELY see hot water to the washing machines here, it is just not done. We have it in our house and I had to fight, tooth and nail to get it, my wife thought it was a dumb idea, but I showed here some info on bugs and mites that live in our clothes, and if you only use cold water, you just get clean bugs and mites............. now she uses VERY hot water on occasion :D

The toilet is also not on that board, it is already plumbed, and the line goes underground, to who knows where and I'm not messing with it :D

The whole building only has one water meter, they divide the water bill by the number of tenants in the building :dunno: because of this, the water lines are not divided up into "zones" for each aparto, they kind of go here and there

Cheers!

I went out to Super Viva Home today, I needed to get a few bits for the plumbing and electrical, one of the bits is a Rinnai tankless water heater :thumb:

In the first aparto reno, we had a plumbing company do this, the total cost of the install, including the tub and water heater was around $3400, I did not know how to do it, so there was not much else I could, but I did watch and learn :D
tankless_water_heater.jpg
That cost me right around $400, the list price is $1200, which is what the plumbing company charged us for the first aparto  Live and learn I guess :dunno:

I got started on the plumbing, this is the first step, from the main water line to a manifold, to feed the other lines........
plumbing_manifold.jpg
..... three lines, one to the hot water heater, then cold water lines, one to the kitchen and one to the bath room, which will tee off to the washing machine, as they are within feet of each other. From the hot water heater, I'll go to the kitchen, then tee to the bath and tee again to the washing machine. After a short discussion, we decided to put hot water to the washing machine too, why not, I bet it did not cost an extra $100 :dunno:

Not much more than that done at the aparto today, I did get all of the kitchen cabinet sizes, so I can do all the plumbing, drains etc as well.

One thing that I did pick up today, I'd like to present to you all as a "Whats It" :D
whats_it07.jpg whats_it06.jpg whats_it05.jpg whats_it04.jpg whats_it03.jpg

It is made out of a semi soft plastic, it has a hinge in the center and can be opened up, and closed.

I'l be using maybe 3 or 4 of them in the Aparto.

So, what is it :dunno:

No one has a guess even

BTW, I just have to mention to you all, today, out of the blue, the Monster-In-Law gave me 50,000 yen (about $500) in cash, as payment for my "Out of pocket money" from the first renovation :eek::eek: you could have knocked me over with a feather.....

Seems the accountant said she could write off that much "Cash" out of pocket expenses, maybe what we'd call "Sundry Expenses"...... ?

My wife and I were BOTH shocked, but not too shocked to take the kind off and say a big "Thanks" :thumb:

Yes, it went straight into MY bank account, I offered to my lovely wife, but said said "Add it to the 'TOY' fund....." I do love that woman ;) :D

Cheers!

Stu, I can't come up with anything for a guess...wall mounted candy dishes?

Gotta love the suprise of the Monter-n-Law handing the $$ to you, but you have to love your lovely wife much more for saying "Add it to the TOY fund":clap:

Ya got me on the spheres. Some sort of temporary cover for foam insulation or paint?

Things are looking great Stu! This unit seems to be going much smoother.

Wes

Shouldn't the shutoff valve be in a more accessible place instead of buried inside the wall?

As for the whatsit... er, um. There seems to be no access hole so I can't see them clamping around a water line or electrical line. But there are two clips, so it looks like it hangs onto something. Hmmm. :dunno:

Is it a j-box: a junction box to hold electric lines where they are spliced or split?

I can see the TV commercial now...

New! Improved! The WonderBox by Rubbermaid! It's an electrical accessory and a handy food storage box, all in one convenient package!

Adding a new circuit, Sparky? WonderBox is there for you.

Feeling hungry, Bunky? Check the fridge. WonderBox is there, too. Yum! :thumb:

WonderBox is also great for storing fishing lures, dog snacks, wire nuts, Aunt Ethel's appendix, or your cherished Hot Wheels collection. :D

You are kidding aren't you Stu? Sort of reminds me of some of the wiring we found in the walls of the last renovation I did.

Are those connections going to be accessible after you hang the wall covering?

Nope, not kidding, and yeah, the connections will become inaccessible, but that is not a problem here :dunno:

Remember, different place, different standards

Had a short, but good day today :thumb:

I got the tankless water heater installed and plumbed........

tankless_heater_installed.jpg
Screwed to the wall, and plumbed :D

I then got going on the inside plumbing, I would have gotten it done, but, I was short one "T" fitting

I also have to check the height of the counter and the washing machine, to set the faucet heights.

This stuff is sure different to work with, I picked the brain of the plumber who worked on the first aparto, when I saw how well this stuff worked, basically, he told me that you need one clip within 18" from each connection, but apart from that, you don't need any other clips. When the plumbing runs under the floor, like here, you just let it run where it want to, don't try to make it go where you want, let it flop around..... :dunno:

When I was talking to the plumbing guy, at the DIY shop, he said exactly the same thing :dunno:

plumbing_spaghetti_1.jpg plumbing_spaghetti_2.jpg plumbing_spaghetti_3.jpg
Thus, it looks really messy to my eye, but that is what I'm told is the way to do this stuff.

I bet I'm going to get told I'm all wet on that one now  :)

Stu,
You're right, it is a bit hard to look at from a strictly organizational stand-point. But hey, if it works . . . !

A friend recently build his own house and used PEX to plumb it all. I still tease him about the garden hoses in the walls.;):D Of course, at the time he built, he would have had to triple his budget (and time) to use copper.

I'm still taken aback with the junction boxes. I guess from an inspection point of view, they are great. But they look so temporary to these eyes which grew up running conduit and BX armored cable into metal boxes. (It's a Chicago thing.)

Anyhow, the speed that this unit is coming back together is astounding - especially considering you are doing it in your spare time!!:thumb:

Wes

PS: It wouldn't be a real plumbing project if you didn't have to go back to get another fitting!

Boy Wes, are you right about the "Missing Fixture" aspect of plumbing :bang: :)

This week has not gone as expected, a bunch of other little things have come up and have really limited my time at the aparto

I did almost get the plumbing roughed in.......

kitchen_roughed_in.JPG
The kitchen roughed in, I put the two tap on, because I know the Gas guy will need to test things, and it is nice to have running water in the place.

washing_machine_roughed_in.JPG

I would have gotten the rough in for the washing machine and the bath done, but I still needed that "T" that I missed, I was able to pick it up on the way home from the aparto, so I'll get that done tomorrow.

Slowly but surely :D

Looking good Stu,

I built our house a couple of years ago and used pex instead of copper. It took me and my FIL a day to have the rough in done on a 2100 sq/ft house. I used a manifold system. There are only two fittings for each fixture, one at the manifold and one at the fixture.
