A SketchUp Warm-Up Exercise

well Dave my method may not be a elegant as yours but it is how I taught my self, I make the component for the bottom, 1 end and 1 side as unique items then I duplicate them in much the same as I would in the shop then I drill the hole in the top and end make the pin and the knobtook about 30-35 minutes.

and here is a picture of my dry fit

Don, good work.

Gary, my recommendation would be to draw the box assembled rather than as separate parts spread around the model space. Then you won't need to go through the assembly process.

Might as well have a noob join in for the giggle factor ... & don't let me hold up the train... I'm just tagging along for the inspiration/challenge
I've toyed with SU an hour here, an hour there, but never really gave it a chance...maybe this will light the fire....anyways...
here's what I managed in about 2 hours :(, I haven't begun to learn making hexagons/octagons etc ...
it's messy, but it's a start! :D

Ok made it just in time

Hi Dave and all

Great starter. Man i was bamboozled by the nut. Took me back to high school geometry . This getting gray hair and loosing the memory stuff is for the birds.:(

Well thank you for waiting here is my effort. Was a great excercise.

Looking forward to seeing how you do it.

Thanks for getting us going Dave this bootcamp could be just the thing. You gonna need to build us slowly.

Good work, Rob. Out of curiosity, how did you draw that nut? And how long did you spend on it?

FWIW, it really isn't a nut. It's just a small piece of wood whittled to an octagon. Nut seems like a good name.

Sounds like Carol might be the last to chime in so we'll wait for her. Maybe tonight I'll post my method.

And for all who have tried, I hope you didn't find any need to use any "heavy duty" tools. At least the way I did it, it was all very basic tool usage.
