So, what's next? Tools that is!

If this is want and not need, I can join in. First and foremost would be a bigger shop because without that I have all that will fit. I could use a better belt/disc sander. My little old Craftsman sputters along, and thank the good lord I don't need to use it often. If I had a better one I know I would find more uses for it. I could use a better band saw, because I find myself using the 14" Ridgid more and more and the more I use the more I wish I had a bigger, better one. The one I have is on loan from my son, doubt he will ever ask for it back. I would like a metal lathe, but better leave that to my B-I-L. He needs one and I keep telling him so. Then he can teach me how to use it. Guess I'm pretty satisfied. Boy, that is boring!:(

Wow you a lucky man Alan to get to that point.

Sorry Bill S my bad i my comment came out wrong and got misinterpreted. It was me thinking i only posted my machine want list but in hindsite that aint even complete.

I love tools...to me they not only tools they works of art.

Just think ...we have a advert on radio/tv currently about the comparison of the value of a registered nurse versus a highly paid sports star......posing the question should we not show the nurse more appreciation when you consider what they do.

Well i look at some famous "artworks" where i cannot make out whats in the picture and they go for $$$$$ that would set up one heck of a nice shop. I think my Amish is showing in me but i can go for years without new shoes but heck i need my tool fixes. :)
Hey Ken W what you say?

Waffling between 'real' dust collection or a new air compressor. Old one has been rebuilt at least once but is struggling again. Can air compressors suffer from asthma? :)

Much like Paul, I think the first thing I'd want is more space, which isn't real likely in the foreseeable future. But if I had that, my list would include:

A bigger bandsaw...the Mini-Max MM20 or similar
Cyclone DC with real ductwork
Sawstop cabinet saw with Incra fence system
Stationary planer in the 15" or larger class
8" Jointer

And if I just happened to fall into a big pile of money, a Robust American Beauty sure would fit the decor. :)

Realistically, I've pretty much got all the bases covered with my current tools. Some could stand to be larger, but only if I had the space for them.

In the process of upgrading all of my machinery at the moment, have recently bought a 6 inch jointer, a 15 inch thicknesser and 2 hp dust collector

Would like -
Bigger, better lathe - haven't really decided on which brand, but i know what features i want, so this will most likely be the next purchase
larger and more powerful saw bench

Just need the sparkie to show up and finish wiring up the workshop (need 15 amp power to run the thicknesser ) and the end will be in sight
Built the shed/workshop about 3 years ago ( 20 x 30 feet ) and have been slowly getting all the tools and machinery i want - but as we all know, time and more importantly money sometimes can be hard to come by .. hopefully by the end of the year .....

Approval of my spouse for something, anything, I have done.

So there is a story that a knitter shouldn't ever make a sweater (which are tedious to make, socks and hats are ok :D) for their loml because they'll not fully appreciate it and then it'll go all downhill from there. I suspect there may be a corollary with woodworking.... In either case I do it because I enjoy it, and sometimes that drive loml crazy becasue I make project waaaay more complicated than requested.. but then she does the same thing with her fiber work so I have justification :D

My wife, approve, well not to me, but I find out later she was telling people what I had done. Even the kayak build created lots of nag, nag, nag from my wife. Then I find out she is wanting a picture of it to show people what I had built. I'm pretty much deaf to the nagging. I mean after 45 years, I still love her:dunno:

Well now...

Short term, in about 3 weeks, Lori, Patrick and I will be migrating back to Lakeport, so my shop will be my Shop again... I'll post more on there, but off of the top of my head my tool list is pretty short right now:

I already have most of the core tools, and since I've almost been sawdust free for a year... I'll go off on a tangent:

Turning lesson from Bill G.
A new set of doors and deck on the shop
and just to get a Tool in the mix
A better drill/driver than the orange homeowner one now own.

Oh, and a bigger DC... probably going to pull a Vaughn and customize a HF one with a new coat of pain and one of those home brew separators.

What a coat of pain might look like:

For the drill/driver, I can't say enough good things about the Milwaukee drivers I've added to my collection. :thumb:

This should have been first but, since you blew that chance and got that dirty old saw first, at least make it next. Dust collection should be your next priority IMHO. :thumb:

In my opinion, Dust Collection should have been first. That is what I did. I also made a different choice than I would have made if I had more experience at the time. I did a two bagger, one micron, 2 hp, unit. (PennState in case you care). It does the job. However, there is no slack. Only one port at a time open or a considerable drop in air movement is noticed.

I am running all six-inch PVC ducting except some drops are four-inch. There are NO 90 degree turns. The ducts stay clean inside; they are taking everything to the DC.

The DP, planer, both sanders, the 17 inch BS are all clean as a whistle. The Delta 14 inch BS is tremendously better than without the DC; however, it is not perfect. I will say the same for the lathe. I have two of the 2 1/2 inch stay in position, flex hoses at the lathe. When I stop and really position them, they do a good job (not perfect). I sincerely believe both of my "problem" spots would vanish if I had more horsepower.

If I were to do it again:
1 Same as this time. Use 6 in PVC ducts throughout using 4 in drops where necessary.
2 Stay with no 90 degree turns.
3 Go to 4 plus horse power.
4 Use a cyclone.
5 Have the collector, itself, in another room as I have done this time.
6 I have two remotes for the DC. I really like that. I have one marked No, that hooks onto the BS (North end of shop) and one marked So that hooks on the lathe to the South. They both, very easily, lift off of the machine and hook in a belt loop. That way I do not have a 40 foot round trip to get a remote if I am North and the control is South.
7 For short runs I slip on a headset hearing protector. For long runs I use the foam plugs. With safety glasses, dust mask, face shield and hearing protection, the ear plugs are much better. However, it takes longer to put them on and I am a type "A."

WHAT EVER YOU DO, PROTECT YOUR EYES, EARS AND LUNGS. Two people who were very close to me died a really lousy death because they did not protect their lungs. Please don't join them. My hearing has dropped off quite a bit (old age has nothing to do with it). I can still hold conversations without too many, "Huh? or "Please repeat that's." However, I have not gone to a movie for 10 years or more because I cannot understand them (hearing, not stupidity). As for the other item; who wants to be blind.

Sorry for the lecture but don't ruin a bunch of your life through neglect.

Enjoy,

JimB

Drum sander is the only thing on my short list.

Once I expand the Dungeon, yes you read that right, I'll be getting a metal lathe, TIG welder, Plasma Arc Torch, and a horizontal end mill :thumb:
