Turned Chessmen

I have followed this thread from the beginning, just waiting to come up with the proper words for this project, every one covered them all already, so just mark me speechless :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

EDIT: Does your daughter know you are making this for her???

EDIT: Does your daughter know you are making this for her???

Maybe....

I said I'd turn her a set of chessmen for the board i made her for Xmas for her birthday, I've missed the birthday, and we gave her another present already, so I would bet, she is not expecting this. :D

"Hope we enjoyed ?" Naaaah we did not enjoy it, we loved every minute of it. Green with envy at the job you done. :D Man if ever there was a labor of love this set has to be it.

The thought of entrusting this set to a postal or any other service to transport has me quiet concerned. Never mind the price it gets insured at its irreplaceable.

Thats gonna be one heck of a testy time waiting for the delivery to know it reached destination. Oh boy all the flashbacks to lost luggage taking place in my mind.:D

Stu it came out so marvelous its sureal. The board is beyond words and the pieces well like others i am at a loss for words and Vaughn already wrapped me over the knuckles from mentioning those sexy legs.:rofl::rofl::rofl:;)

Its quiet an come down when a project like this comes to an end. One watches progress with great anticipation and when its over there is a void.

I remember the same feeling when i used to sail catamarans competitively and enter regattas that lasted 4 days. At the end of it all when we all packed up our boats and headed home it was quiet a blue moment. That is until the next one.

The really great thing is you documented this whole process so in time to come its actually going to be better than a photograph album for your daughter to show the next gen after her just what went into making this set.

Looking forward to seeing the pro shots. Hope you gonna share them here as well. ;)

Fantastic project Stu. I'm very impressed with every aspect of it. Wish I could do anything half as good as you. I'm sure your daughter will love it. Well done!

Great job Stu.

If it will cost $250 to ship, I think you should upgrade to a courier service for 3 times that price.... and have you or your wife carry it in a hard side suitcase, and hand deliver it.

i agree with charlie, this gift deserves to get that smile and thankfullness in person stu,, you only live once and money isnt everything in this world as some seem to think..

Master class from a master craftsman, Thank you so much Stuart, for taking us along for the ride and for taking the time to photo every step and post it on here, i have really enjoyed watching your progress (as I'm sure have many others !!) The standard of your work is truly amazing Stu, hope you have some more projects in the pipeline coming up soon !!

Hard to express my admiration for that project without resorting to trite superlatives.
You incorporated many different skills and craft-sets creating and making that. And you did all expertly.
To call it a simple gift is an understatement. You are giving of yourself, it is a heritage that hopefully will survive in your family for many generations.
I am awed.

Thanks everyone, very kind words!

First pic from my buddy Tim, the photographer.....

Deep_Blue_Kasparov.jpg

Tim and I found some famous chess games on the net and staged them, this was IBM's Deep Blue Vs Kasparov, man Vs machine, and when this game was played, the man still had the advantage, and Deep blue retired at this point.

This game was featured in Blade runner, and is a very famous game called the "Immortal Game".

I cannot thank Tim enough for the lovely pics. Now I just have to box this thing up and send it on it's way!

Cheers!

Ditto, Ahhhh the sweet joys of a professional photographer. :thumb: No kidding to the words a picture is worth a 1000 words.

I just cannot get my mind around being brave enough to hand that set and board over to some 3rd party and rely on them to get it to its destination never mind safely and complete and in one piece errrr well i mean intact. What you gonna put down for insurance value....200 plus hours and material @ ? $ plus margin plus pain and suffering somehow a passenger courier ticket is looking cheap.

Stu you might want to look into that. I know from a cousin back in SA that used to do it. Maybe someone here can shed light on this topic.

My cousin used to get a free ride to several places through his company which was a courier service. Stipulation was that he take no bags except a small carry on. The courier service would buy the ticket and use the passenger ticket to load bags of "documents" being couriered to a specific destination on the back of the passenger tickets free luggage allocation. At the other end the passenger collects the bags and hands them over to the recieving courier and gets to have a few days off before the return trip with more document bags.

This kind of thing could work out for you and you could take the set aboard with you. You can always pick up a clean t shirt and shorts in BC if you could get in on something like this.

Your friend did you proud with those pics. Fantastic project, and fantastic documentation. Send it off to the magazines and get it published!
