Mission/Arts and Crafts Buffet and Hutch Build - Finished!

well gary you can say not half bad for not making any in oak for said period of time but we both know that you have made many dovetails during that time and practice is what makes one good at his craft not the wood:) well done and yup oak is one of the worst to use for this folks and he done a splendid job..

Slimmer Doors

Thanks guys for the comments.

Not much time in the shop the past week. But we did move a little forward.
While doing the tails for the second two drawers the stain was splashed on the two hutch doors.
I'm real happy the rails and stiles look a bit slimmer now...

If the stars and moon line up this weekend my last two drawers will be done and my project will be pretty much in the bag.

Hope everyone gets a little shop time this weekend.

Final Details..

Thanks Larry. The guy I get my white oak from up here sure has a good supplier.
It sure is pricey but I am always happy with the product. As for the next project, we will see what the boss comes up with....

I am on my last details now.
First thing I did this morning was to get the two hutch drawers fitting properly.
There should be a gap all around the drawer and I get this effect with a quick trip to the table saw.
A 1/16" deep by 1/4" rabbet is put in to give me the effect one is looking for.

My drawers on the buffet have guides so we need a groove on the drawer sides.
I use my router table for this.

The drawers will fit tight at the start but I use my LN 99/98 (side rabbet plane) to shave off a bit and give me the proper fit.
I make sure to take off the bottom to make sure I don't effect the gaps....

And with a few swipes we get a nice smooth fit.

I cut a pretty respectable dovetail but sometimes we are pleasantly rewarded.
After cleaning up the joints on the last drawer I ended up with this.

This one I am really, really happy with. So much I even sent a pic to my buddy Cosman...:D

And So We Have It!

Happy day in my shop....

After 3 1/2 months I finally get a peek at how this buffet and hutch look like together.
There were a couple of bumps in the road but all in all I'm really happy how it has turned out...
The boss gave it a final thumbs up. :thumb: And when it comes down to it, thats all that matters.
Happy wives, happy lives.

All thats left to do is the sprayed topcoat and install the glass.
But for all intense and purposed this one is done...
Thanks to all those who tagged along.
Now to figure out what project is next on the agenda...
I'm wanting to do a Gus Stickley Eastwood Chair but I think the boss has different ideas..
Something about a larger buffet and hutch to go with her dining room table.

Till next time.:)

gonna miss this gary:( very well documented and excutued.. very fine work.. did you put any finish on the sides of the drawers either the frnt or the sides? they look very clean but not finished maybe wax?

Thanks for the comments guys.
Larry the two smaller drawers have BLO cut with turpentine on the sides giving them the yellow tint.
The two other drawers had raw sides in the pics. They now have the BLO on them and are drying.

If only we had audio. You could hear the oooh's and ahhhh's that hit the airwaves when I showed your final pics to LOML. I'm afraid your beautiful work has caused me to morph my next planned project from a simple "baker's rack" for the kitchen into some sort of "baker's hutch" if there is such a thing :thumb:.
