BOX SWAP 2013 - Boxes are showing up!!,

Well, Vaughn, the first paragraph is as follows:
"You are participating in a major event in history. This is the first box, of any kind, that I have ever made."

Let's just say the rest of his letter talked about a "learning experience". :)

It did NOT contain any non-FW acceptable comments.

Actually I had fun doing it. Actually I did get a bit frustrated getting things to come out close to what I wanted. When I do another one it will be much better (sorry Bill).

Enjoy,
JimB

Mr Brown came today. My heart sank when I saw the crushed box.

Then I opened the top of the box and was elated to see all of the abuse proof packing. Heck, you could ship the Mona Lisa with packing like that.

After going down through the 2” foam, bubble pack, sheets of foam wrapping I came to the final wrapper---A GI pillow case?---Which I took in the house so Myrna could see the final unveiling. I reached inside and pulled the box out. “WOW!” was the next thing I heard. I wish I had recorded that.

I opened the box. It contained a very nice letter from Bill Arnold and a very nice present from his wife, Bobbie---Chocolate covered pecans.

(Allen, You cannot look---you are not permitted to see pictures of goodies like that.)

The chocolate covered pecans are from a factory 10 miles from Bill. It was started in 1918. It is now a third generation business; the Dillon Candy Company. They do small batches of specialty nut candies cooked in open copper kettles, “The old fashion way.” (After sampling the goodies Myrna and I understand why they only do small batches. If they didn’t keep them small, everyone in town would weigh 400 pounds.)

Back to the box. Here is a pic of the lid

Top corner of box. See how neatly the corner leg/post makes a place to hold the lid securely.

The bottom of the box looks better than the top of a lot of commercial boxes.

After saying all of the above I will add that I would have enjoyed and loved it just as much if it had been someone’s first project and looked like it was made by a 5 year old. That is because it is from someone on Family Woodworking doing what they do at their current level of expertise.

Thank you Bill.

Myrna, get away from the pecans. Those are for US.

Enjoy,
JimB

I could not get the pic of the crushed box to show. It shows on the list of files uploaded. Anyway, that is no loss it is just a pic of a box.

Nope. No CoC violations at all.

We all get better as we gain experience, but there's nothing wrong with what you sent me, although I guess I have to say US now. LOML has commandeered your box and placed it on a side table on her side of our bed!

The shipping box had a couple of crinkles in it when we sent it. I knew I didn't want the box inside the box to get crushed and it appears we accomplished that feat. Enjoy the box and the chocolates, Jim - however many Myrna lets you have!

Wow Bill! That's some good looking box! Did you veneer the sides of that box like that? And how did you do the curved lid?

Man o man, I just love these swaps:thumb: just look at what everyone has created, and Bill, another
WELL DONE for sure, awesome! And to think I believe there are still 5 more to come:)

well jim, you got a dandy box for sure but i can attest that the pecans are almost as good as that box:) its worth driving to georgia to get more:) excellent job on that box bill!!

It's here, Tom Bagues! & I'm just a dummy!

Thanks Tom, ya done good for me!!!

To all who set out to read this post.

For it to make any sense to you start at the bottom and work your way to the top. I thought I had picture posting etc. down pat, guess I was wrong there as well.

I wasn't going to enter the box swap this year. Thanks to Tom, I did! Lucy has confiscated it for her use, probably to hold all of the expensive jewelry I have bought for her over the past 30+ years.:D

I think I finally got it!
Walnut, Cherry, and Oak (not certain if white or red) Doesn't matter much. Looks great, and very smooth on the inside. (no bandsaw marks that I can discern)

Then the lights came on!

I'm just dumb why? This was my first thought how this box should sit! DUH!

Mack, glad the package finally got to you. Canada is a long way off. Anyway....first I need to apologize to you. I wrote this real detailed letter explaining how the box was made, what type of wood and finish. It would have solved some of the mystery you had when you opened the package. After mailing the package I came home to find the letter still sitting here on my desk.....I had forgotten to put it inside the box. :bang:
Anyway....It is my second attempt at a bandsaw box. It is made of Walnut, Cherry and Oak and finished with Danish Oil. The design changed several times until I came up with this one. It is a pretty simple box but I hope you can enjoy it.

Don't feel lonely, Tom. I did the same thing with the box I sent to Tom Niemi. :bang:
