Carcass - Rabbet top or side

On a carcass, do you rabbet the ends (Img 1) of the top and bottom or the sides (Img 2)? Is there a correct way or is this entirely preference? The piece I'm designing is going to be 36" high, 18" wide, and 9-3/4" deep.

i would go with number one at the top, and i would use number 2 for the bottom. with the cases that i've built, i've had dadoes at the bottom.

I'm far from an expert, but image #2 is stongger if you will be putting anything on top. Won't be the chance of the material splitting. Is there going to be another layer of material to go on top of the rabbet? If you add a second top that would cover the expose edge of the rabbet.

if the top isnt going to be bearing much weight, and you are dadoing in shelves, Id go with number 2. ONly have to set machines up once for width cuts on top and shelves and dado depth.

I'm making a doll wardrobe for my granddaughter. I'm making it out of 1/2" BB plywood and painting it white to match the bunkbed & trundle I made for her last year. The top section will be for hanging clothes with two bars; the bottom section will contain two drawers for foldable clothing.
