Couple Newbe Bowls

Couple bowls I made this weekend -- Still working on developing skills but I'm slowly getting there. First one is mystery wood from firewood pile -- It was previously worm food and somewhat spalted. It's kinda thick by todays standards but I was afraid to go much thinner -- there were lots of surprises in there. The second one was requested by LOML as a gift for a friend -- is a lot more tame, Maple and Black Walnut, walls are a little thinner than the first, all in all I think it looks good.

I'm learning so comments and critiques are very welcomed.

Super job on both bowls, Tony. :thumb: I really like the form on both of them (the curves flow well and they are nice and even). The maple/walnut bowl is a knockout, whether it came from a newbie or an experienced pro. Very well done on both pieces.

Tony 2 beautiful bowls off of (pun intended) a beautiful lathe.:D You did a great job on them. What kind of finish did you use on them? How big are they? Keep'em coming.

They both look good, I agree with Vaughn, the form is great.

Thinner would be better, but not too thin!

The second one I really like, for it's simplicity, VERY nice!:thumb:

They are finished with Mylands Friction Polish, buffed at high RPM's.

The wormy one is 7 1/2" diameter at the rim, 3 3/8" high. It's about 3/4" thick at the base tapering to 3/8" at the rim.

The maple / walnut one is 5 1/2" diameter at the rim, 2 1/4" high. It's about 1/2" thick at the base tapering to 1/4" at the rim.

Wall thickness is still a challenge to me, I've ordered Thickness Calipers from Lee Valley, should be delivered tomorrow. I hope I got the right ones and I hope they will help.

Tony.......Very nice first bowls! I wish mine had turned out that well. While I have and use thickness calipers.........the best local turner I know and he's very skilled, just uses his fingers. Recently I took a photo of Dave Richards sail boat wheel in for him to see. He requested I bring in some of my recent turnings for his viewing. When I showed up with a bowl I turned from maple burl and a HF.........He just used his finger tips and would you believe he found defects that I didn't notice with my calipers?..........He is extremely talented and experienced, however.

Again...nice bowls! Keep at it!
