I took pics of the harvest moon and I flounder around - guessing at settings, with "some" learning about that sort of shooting.
From there I looked at my settings and compared yo my samples.
I also forgot to bring several things with me when shooting
I did this on Sept 8, 9, 10
I got a few "fair" to almost "good" shots.

After that I focused in of learning about low light and night sky photos
The Milky Way is intriguing to me.

(As an aside - I also learned that my smart phone is fully capable of full manual mode.)

Last night at about 8:30 - sunset is about 7:00

I learned some basic settings and I set up by Canon Rebel T6i on my Joby gorilla pod and shot the night sky for the first time ever.
Yeah - I have a looooonnnggg way to go, but it's a start.
There were some light clouds, the sun went down only 1-1/2 hours ago, the moon is coming up in an hour or so, focus is not right yet, but settings are really close.

I am excited.

I will do more trials with my Canon 90D and Monfroto tripod.
