    Sideboard for the Dining Room

At this point in a build I start to measure off the piece rather than off the plans. As promised I am moving 'all ahead slow' with the gimpy wrist. I thought I would get one side panel done today . . . at least right off the machines with all the joinery completed anyway . . . nope...

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

So here's my templates and a pair of panels that I need to shape. I need to account for the 1-1/2" stile that will divide the book matched panels. I will have a 1/4" tongue on all the panels so I use 1-2-3 blocks to account for the remaining inch during template setup. I failed to take pics...

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

More cogitating today than sawdust making. I did manage to resaw out some book matched blanks for the floating panels in the sides but that's about it. My wrist is a-singin'. I gots to go ice it a while.

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

Just showing this as an example of using setup blocks. The same template is used for the upper and lower rail. The lower rail is 1" wider so I just step it off with 1-2-3 blocks. I boogered one of the parts but not fatally. A spoke shave saves the day. Time to cut the leg...

    70-1/2" bandsaw blades

For my 10" Rikon bandsaw I have been pretty happy with Olsen's PGT series. I order replacements when I swap out dead blades. Just noticed a good price ($13) on the APG73170 that I use the most and thought I would share.

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

It has been years since I confirmed the position of my router motor in my lift. Turned out it needed an additional strip of foil tape where a couple of others had compressed over the years. Setting up for some template offset routing is what made this catch my eye. All better now. My thanks...

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

. . . cont'd The vac method worked much more reliably. I then milled the blanks just like you would single-piece blanks. The side panels will involve some template routing. For those of us without a CNC, here's how we roll. . . I used to use one half of a template and then flip it to make...

    Sideboard for the Dining Room

I may be jumping the gun on this one. I realize today that it is going to take a lot longer than it should. I jacked up the tendons in my wrist doing some domestic chores a few weeks ago. Finally went to the doc . . . blah, blah, blah . . . But, why not drag you poor folks along on my slow...

    Plywood and composite scrap

I know, broken record . . . I have a bin that I toss ply and composite scrap into. Small pieces of ply and MDF, tec. can be handy for many things. I just don't understand how I accumulate so much of it!?!

    RIP Wayne Shorter

When I was in college I remember the jazz and classical folks looking down on rock whereas most of the rock folks liked rock, jazz, classical, and most other forms of music. Who's stupid now :D:D:D

    Urn project

Nice looking design. If he names and dates will be carved in I see the tube as unnecessary. If it will just be names as shown the tube could hold other significant info of interest.

Wixey Tablesaw DRO - Battery Life

I have run a Wixey DRO for my tablesaw fence since around 2005. A decade or so ago I started the habit of writing the date on a new battery for certain tools like my various DRO's. The tablesaw DRO display started acting funky. I removed the battery (without really looking at it) and left out...

    RIP Wayne Shorter

Just heard that Wayne passed on the second of this month. A jazz band leader in the 60s, winner of 12 Grammys, Downbeat Mag's critics poll winner for 10 years on soprano sax (although he played others) . . . whew . . .what else? Started the jazz fusion group Weather Report with Josef Zawinul...

    Teeth fairy box

Very cool Toni. "Also be done on a lathe"? So, how did you do it? All CNC?

    Router table height gauge question.

As my eyes get older I find using a rule to be more awkward. Whiteside 4" setup blocks and a 1-2-3 block meet most of my needs around the shop. There are fancier ones but they don't seem to add any real value in use. I have some of the shorter setup blocks (2-1/2" I think) but find I rarely...

Almost time for a router lift...

The Woodpeckers PRL-1 has an automatic locking mechanism as did the original Bench Dog lift IIRC. This is one of the things that led me to seek out a second PRL-1 instead of the PRL-2 when it was introduced. The amazingly stout Bench Dog lift had already morphed to a different animal at that...

Almost time for a router lift...

I will just kick in that a single feed screw design can struggle with heavier routers so factor that in. I have never been big on a lot of bells and whistles on a router lift but that's me. If the plate or your table have any kind of scale on them the bit will have to be well centered in the...
