Another "What kind of Wood" question

I was thinking cherry too, but it's a lot lighter in color than the cherry I have on hand. The previous owners of the house I got the logs from told me it was a Japanese maple. At any rate, some nice looking wood, just need to find a project for it. Chris

Another "What kind of Wood" question

I cut down a tree in my front yard about 5 years ago. Put the logs in the barn and left them there. Today I decided to try cutting them into slabs ( the log was only about 8" in diameter and 2' long). Anyhow I have no idea what kind of wood this is. Chris

    Dust collector question

I'm certainly glad I asked this question. Being fairly new to dealing with dust collection, in particular something like the Delta I have as opposed to a standard shop vac, there's a lot of things I hadn't considered. The shop vac hose idea was just a short term solution, but as all but my...

    Dust collector question

That's an aspect I didn't think of. Thanks for the heads up, guess it's time to order "stuff" for the shop.

    Dust collector question

I purchased a Delta 1HP dust collector. It's small and on wheels which makes it perfect for my basement shop. My question is,I know it's for a 4" hose, but would I be putting too much stress on the motor if I used reducers to be able to use a shop vac (2 1/2") hose? Chris

    Table Saw Blade Query

In an effort to advance my overall wood working skills I'm going to move toward higher quality equipment. With that in mind I know I need to upgrade the blades for my table saws, I have 2 set up, so my thinking is this. 1 saw has a zero clearance insert, this will be for more intricate cutting...

    Shop words of wisdom

My grand dad had one which is a variant on the 5 foot, 5 year rule. When he finished a project he'd look at me and say.."well...a hundred years from now it won't matter....good nuff!!!" Chris

    How would you do it?

I spent this morning tinkering with some different ideas. The strip is 3/4 wide and I need it 3mm thick. I tried the sanding thing with both my drill press and spindle sander, just couldn't get it absolutely smooth. I believe the table saw is the way to go. Going to try that tomorrow, +1 on the...

    How would you do it?

I believe I saw a reply from you on a different post the other day where you explained this and I've been thinking about it seriously. This along with the idea from Mike I'm sure I'll get this going in the right direction. This is a great site to get ideas from or just to confirm that your on...

    How would you do it?

I thought about that, but I don't have a quality hand plane. I really don't have much experience with hand planes other than you need a good quality and sharp blade.

    How would you do it?

Mike, That might just work, I'm thinking I may give that idea a try but on my spindle sander, If that doesn't work I do have those sanding sleeves you have pictured. At any rate it'll work until I can upgrade...Thanks.. Chris

    How would you do it?

I need a strip of curly maple 3 mm wide. I tried cutting a strip 5mm wide then using the thickness planner to slowly take it to 3mm on the 3rd pass things went south and the maple didn't survive. My question is how would you do it?. Get a strip of curly maple to 3mm? Chris

    Unknown Wood

My thought is to make a dining room table, small one, just me and the wife. I also plan to fill the cracks and such with epoxy. Nice looking piece of wood and it was free. Chris

    Unknown Wood

I picked up a band saw from a guy back in December, he tossed in a few boards laying near by. He thought it might be Cherry, but it seems a bit dark to me. Chris

    Beaverton Mi here

Here's my most recent project. It actually started as a standard 2 X 4. After milling, joining, planning and sanding, cutting and so forth ended up with this...

    Beaverton Mi here

Been working with wood longer than I'd like to think about, mostly scroll saw stuff, intarsia and such. Like the bigger stuff too. Working on getting a handle on dust collection now. It's nice to find a place that understands 4/4 board, the smell of sawdust in the morning and the pleasure of a...
