2011 Swap Box display thread

Well worth waiting for :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

Just received an amazing box from Rob Keeble. The design, workmanship and finish are simply beautiful :clap:

It made from what I expect is Michigan walnut :D. They are all hand cut dovetails that look like they have been expertly made by someone that has been making them for a lifetime..
It took me a minute to figure out how to open the box. Every joint is so well made that the seams kind of hid the secret to getting it open.

The box is only half the story. Rob made a beautiful router plane. The blade looks like it was made from an old allen wrench and as you would expect, the blade has been sharpened to sharper than possible. I can't wait to give it a try.:thumb::thumb::thumb:

As an added bonus Rob added a commemorative South African stamp celebrating Nelson Mandalas 90th birthday. This will go right into my collection. :D

I am sorry for the lousy pictures. I really need to learn how to build a shadow box and work with lighting.

Thank you very much Rob. These are greatly appreciated.

I will say that was worth the wait, that is quite the trick box:thumb: Well done Rob and thanks for finishing it up and Bob I am happy for you, THAT IS A KEEPER:thumb::thumb::thumb: (also the extra goodies:D)

BOUT time bud:) bob just told me the other day he needed a router plane to do some hinge work:) looks sharp and the extras are a nice touch and finally we have end to the saga of the box swap!!!

Awesome job, Rob. In nearly all woodworking projects there are milestone steps, where if you mess up, you have to take several steps back to make a new piece. In this box, I see lots of milestone steps. ;) Very well done. :thumb:

Thank you everyone. I am just very sorry you had to wait this long Bob. And you correct it is Michigan chocolate.

A couple of things here that i came away with.

Be realistic about how far you challenge yourself when you take on a swap project.
I took on a way too complex box for my level. Bob you have been very kind in your pictures and comments but show the filler ( lol) on those joints.

To make this box i used only hand tools after the lumber was milled.
The joints are as simple as you can get. All except that top locking one are straight "finger" type joints. Here is the thing, dimensionally if you cut or trim a joint edge at one end of a particular side just a little to much then you have slop or a gap. So one has to matk out and sneek up on each line and .....know when enough is enough. Oh boy, if i could get that point into my thick perfectionist head i would be a much better woodworker. I keep making the same mistake over and over and keep doing that one little extra trim that leads to one more corrective trim that leads to a new piece. (lol)
There is real craft and skill to be mastered in woodworking and i need to accept it takes time.
Luckily Bob you dont get to see under the vinly ( lol)
As to the plane Bob give it a whirl, modify and adapt it thats a user if it will work but its gonna need some refinement by you.
Finish is wipe on poly, wood is hard Jatoba so between the two it should take abuse. I think a new thumb screw may help cause i got cut out off square but, it came time to shoot the engineer and get on with production and shipping or you would never see it. ( lol) .
Enjoy Bob, i am glad you like it. Have fun with it and the box. btw lets hope that stamp appreciates in value and our grandkids can get something for it one day (lol) He is a special person.

That box came out great Rob. What a cool idea to do it by hand. Kudos for following through.

So true. This is what kept me from participating in previous swaps:eek:. I seem to work sooooo slow. This swap I used a design I had established and knew I could complete. You took on something new and took advantage of the swap to try out new ideas and techniques. Definitely a fair trade for being a bit late. I'll try to be braver next time :).

Still missing one from Brian Altop unless I missed it when it was posted.:dunno:
