I've been retired for a while and was given a lathe by a friend. It is a Sear's Craftsman 351.217150. Turned a few things and on the last attempt, the lathe got slower and slower. Opened it up and found the two retainers guiding the "nut" on the travel screw bent. IMG_5313.jpegFound out it is a retainer part number 18033. Hoping someone out there might know where i can find "new" old stock or a replacement. Sear's no longer has the part in stock and Palmgren's sent me to a guy in Tenn who never returned my call. Any leads would be appreciated. Live in Hawaii so it will turn in to a shipping issue soon enough.

Having owned one of those lathes, I can feel your pain in trying to get parts. I eventually replaced the lathe with something better because I got tired of fixing mine. (It was a great starter lathe though, and I turned some nice pieces on it.) Jim's suggestion of eReplacement Parts is about the only place I can think of that might have that part. And to echo Ted and Darren, you might find it easier to straighten or replace that part yourself. And if you're not geared up to make a new one, perhaps you can find a local machine shop that can fabricate a new one for you.

Thanks guys- took the part to a local machine shop and they are going to try and fabricate something based on the two pieces I have. Just turned a few pieces of wood once and still setting up the one way jig to sharpen the tools. I do have some 2X12 material to set the bench grinder on and hopefully get the one way jig bolted and set up. I'll check with the machine shop in about 3 hours when I am done with my class here.

Joe, welcome to the group. Hope you stick around and show us some of your work. I was in the Sears lathe club until I took it out back and shot it repeatedly with my shotgun and 44 mag revolver. It performed well until I started turing more than pens. If you keep an eye out, JET mini/,midi's are great starting points and I see them on Facebook Market from time to time. Don't let that lathe frustrate you to much. Welcome to the family, hope you can find the part or get one fabricated.

Aloha gang:
The search continues:
This Craftsman lathe is a clone that is sold around the world. I found the sane lathe in Argentina sold as a Gamma G685. These lathes are manufactured in China and go by different names in other Regions. The Palmgren label is just another example of the rebranded tool. Not planning on calling Argentina for this part and currently waiting for a local machine shop to take a swing at replicating it.

Aloha,

Hopefully a machine shop can replicate the parts you need for your lathe. Repairing old equipment can be a challenge at times, but a machine shop should be able to help you out.

My wife and I travel to Hawaii frequently and we’re keeping all of those affected by the devastating Lahaina fires in our thoughts and prayers. We were on Maui two weeks before the fires occurred, to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

Best wishes to you and yours!
