Bambu P1S after a few weeks of use

I figured I might post an update of how things are going with the Bambu P1S printer my wife got me for Xmas.

So far it's been a real pleasure to use and you really can't beat the quality of the prints. I haven't changed any of the default settings other than infill percentages and types.

I have had a couple of minor issues. One with filament getting hung up on the spool. It corrected itself eventually, some of the layers were affected, so the print was re-done. Another issue with the AMS after using an older roll of non-bambu filament. I had to do some disassembly and fix a sensor that was stuck with a small string/strand of filament that got caught in it. I don't really blame the machine or the filament, I couldn't find any other posts on a similar issue, so pretty sure this was just a fluke.

I did try doing some multi-color prints for my wife. For multi-color your can either do "painting" within the Bambu Studio app or you can import multiple file/objects and color each object. The software will slice the print, then for each layer where their are color changes or up to that point, a color tower is created off to the side of your print. The color tower is used to extrude any extra of the previous color before starting on your print. In the case of the flower below, I only had color on the first two layers, so the printer did color changes for those first two layer and printed small rectangles for each color. On the third layer the color switched to white for the rest of the print, so it printed the rectangle for the white only, then didn't print to the color tower for the rest of the print. If there had been another color used higher up in the print, the printer would have continued to print to the color tower up past that point, then stopped there.

If you have pieces that are different colors, you can do the coloring the same, but it's probably faster to just do two separate print sessions, printing all the parts of one color, then another with the other color.

So my wife and I both have several idea for things we'd like to make and sell. I'm the one that is going to be doing all of the "cad" work of the design process, but I'm hoping once she has items created, I can show her how to print her own items as she needs to. I also may put together a "order" system for her to submit things into a queue of what she needs printed and I can schedule and manage the printing side of things.

That being said...

I might have bought a second, and maybe a third P1S. ;)

If we find we need more I may be looking at the A1 versions or the P1S without the AMS units, depending on if we have something that is only one color. You can buy 2Kg, 3Kg, and even 4 Kg rolls of filaments for larger production to use from an external spool holder. For now if we had a large run of the same color, we can load the AMS with several 1Kg spools of the same filament and just have it auto-load from the next spool when one runs out.

That actually seems like a super useful feature. My 3d printing experience is limited but even so running out was more than a bit of a pain with the older printers.

Yeah, you can add filament sensors and have jobs pause, but you still lose that time between spool changes.

I'm still looking to see what I can do for some automation with these, as far as getting more than app notifications on my phone, which I miss seeing quite easily.

There are quite a few different "print farm" software applications available too for managing multiple printers and their statuses. Bambu actually has free software for this, which all runs locally on a windows pc. You do lose cloud capabilities with enabling this, but that certainly isn't a deal killer. ;)
