got a commission to make a barber's bench for a friend of mine (who happens to be a barber). he wants a nice, easy design, nothing too fancy. started doing the design stage a few days ago. i have the design pretty much done, just have to do up a couple of doors, design some saw tooth shelf supports (like in the kitchen cupboard from a couple of years back), the shelves, and a few other things. hopefully i will get the ok from rennie to use that design idea for one of the drawers, as my friend wants to have some sort of pull out shelf. this is probably the first of many pictures to come, it is where it sits design-wise.

It's going to be pine, knots and all, his choice.

I recently did a project in 'clear furniture grade pine'. REALLY soft stuff and very prone to dents and dings. Do you have a source for something harder like southern yellow?
this gets even better, i have had to figure out an idea for a mirror that slides back down into the bench.
How about a counter weight system as found on old double hung windows?

trying to keep it simple. mirror is in a frame, with holes for pivot pins. the frame is within a frame that pulls up through a slot in the top (covered up when mirror is down), then the mirror pivots just a touch, to keep from going back down (rubber bits to keep it in place). it is what he wants rennie, going for a bit of a rustic look to it.

changed plans for the mirror, he is having a good mirror cut for a frame. did a test for the finish, and it came out quite nice. got the box for the hidden compartment yesterday, i think that he will like it.

over the last few days, did a test run of the finish, picked up the lumber, ran a first test of the barber pole for the stiles of the mirror, and got the down payment for materials. russ is quite happy with his sign, and had me take a picture of him with it to show his friends. he was quite happy with the finish too. once i get a few more odds and ends out of the way, i start in on this.

got all of the parts for the mirror frame and stand cut today. got the legs in clamps, and soon will do the feet. russ dropped off the mirror yesterday. good thing i measured it before cutting any parts, it was 1/8" more in each direction. the size was agreed on 24" wide, and 27" tall. going to be a good size mirror when done. the top of the mirror frame is pointed.
