I have a stack of platter blanks collecting dust in a corner so I decided to reduce the height of the stack. I turned an Ambrosia maple platter that not much to sing about. About all I can say is that it is no longer in the stack.
But under that Ambrosia maple blank was a Birdseye Sapele blank that I bought from Pete Kekel at Big Monk Lumber Co. I have had it for several years. It turned out pretty nice if I do say so myself. I have never seen birdseye in this timber before.
Here are a couple of detail pictures showing the texture and beading I applied to the wood on the rim.
With all that work on the front it didn't seem right to ignore the bottom so I did a little texture and bead work there as well.
Lovingly finished in several coats of hand rubbed brushing lacquer and a little wax.
