I was just walking by and looked over, held it in my hand and he said "Dollar too much?" Already got a half dozen block planes, whats one more....

Who made them with maroon colored paint? All I can find is "Made in USA"

Bill, I have one very smiliar I bought at Trupper Hardware in Mexico, maybe four or five years ago. I paid somewhere's around $12 or $15 dollars. No marking on it at all, but I use it a lot. Can't really tell if yours is smaller or not, the one I have is about 7" long and good and hefty. I would suppect it is made in China and copied after other planes. Don't really know that much about planes, but thought this might help you identify your.

Stanley made both a black and a maroon, but as far as I know the maroon was of lower quality.

You can find more info at Patrick Leach tool & gore page.

Thanks, I had completely forgotten about Patrick's page on Stanley planes.

I am more certain it is a Stanley (the cheap version with the rosewood knob) Now I need to find the cap screw...(?):thumb:
