corona virus comment

We have lost 3 folks at work in 2 days. All are in self quarantine. The one guy actually came to work last night after receiving a letter that he has possibly been exposed. He was bragging about the letter. Let's just say he got escorted out real fast.

People doing stupid things are what is going to make this worse

just as with our company, before entering the room with the servers and mainframe, now one must 'suit up' with gloves and a mask, to protect the machines, and prevent the cost of doing a sterilizing of that room. no mention of the hazard to us, when said people 'suit up' in the console room, exposing us to anything.... stupidity reigns

One way or another, get it or not, this virus is likely to have some effect on all of our lives.
I'm retired, but work full time currently for a major auto parts chain, and business is beyond slow with people afraid that they might have to stay home for some time... no one dares to do any "optional" spending for auto repairs.and today we had to ask for volunteers to go home to cut our payroll expense down. We have two part-timers, one of whom is being told that his 2.5 days a week will be .5 for the duration of this slowdown.

We're retired, so all of this has little effect on us. We stay stocked on food and other necessities - don't have to rush out for anything, even if a bad storm heads our way. We have several elderly neighbors (not that we don't fit that category) that we check on routinely. They range from late 80s through early 90s.

The main thing I'm concerned about is my oldest daughter. She's a manager for several medical testing labs in the OKC area. She's also smart enough to follow all sanitation guidelines. Still . . . we're concerned.

I'm "retired" meaning I've been working from home via my computer for over two years. About the only thing I've been doing outside the house is the robotics thing (which after tonight is on hiatus at least into April) but I seem to have some symptoms so I went to get screened today. Mayo Clinic has a drive up screening. I didn't even get out of the car. A fellow heavily garbed in PPE stuck a thin wire up my nose and rubbed the end of it around on the back of my skull. Then he stuck it in a plastic cigar tube and put a sticker on it. Waiting to hear the results. Currently hoping they come back with "You're a hypochondriac. Leave us alone!"

Zoiks Dave! Hope it comes back negative.

Although I'm not retired, I've been reluctant to post about my situation. I've been working from home since, jeez, the early 2000's? Since we moved to Nevada in 2006, I rarely leave the ranch, maybe once every 2 weeks or so, mostly to go to home depot for something or other. We've always kept the basics that people are currently freaking out about in stock, for a decent amount of time.

I guess what I'm saying, is I've been practicing "Social Distancing" for years, and this is really not having much of an impact on me. I'm still working, I'm still doing my hobbies. I worry about the folks that are not in this kind of situation and just hope they are able to weather this storm as best as possible.

My heart goes out to a lot of the people that work in the hospitality industry and the touring bands that are going to have a very hard time over the next few weeks.

There's no doubt this is going to have a hard impact on a lot of smaller businesses and even large ones. Our DIL does bar tending part time in the Seattle area, with the new rules there it's pretty much gotten her laid off from that gig. Luckily she finished her degree and had an IT job that she is doing from home, unfortunately it's a contract, so may end soon. I've been working from home this week, but officially went full time at it as our institute has decided that it was best to do so. Most of the restaurants here are closed for the next month now. I feel for those that are going to be impacted by this and will do my best to support them as I can.

Dave, I hope your test comes back negative and you get to feeling better soon.

We're the same. We've always got several weeks (or more) worth of food and other necessities available, so there's little need to venture forth - except maybe for bread & milk. We also look out for the neighbors, and they look out for us.

Dave, hope its just a cold!

Lots of small businesses here are going to be hit hard, we're a pretty tourist heavy area and I don't see that business recovering soon. Plus with the schools here closed until the end of April (so far) that puts an extra crimp on a lot of folks.

Well, it took a while but I finally got the results back. Fortunately they were negative but that makes me wonder what I do have instead. I'd like to have a donut but that's not likely. :(

Noises about vaccines sounds promising but I would expect availability to the general public is a long way out yet.

Dave, good to hear, but hope you get to feeling better soon.

We've got a couple of cases here in South KC. I don't plan to leave the house for a few weeks, we're stocked up and hunkering down. I've been hitting any packages that arrive with lysol and washing my hands after getting the mail.

I've got a few co-workers going nuts with the work-from-home, but both my wife and I are digging it. Hopefully we'll be able to continue it after all of this has passed, at least part of the time. I'm still putting my full day in and then some since I'm not having to drive 45 minutes each way, and have a lot less meetings at this point.

The numbers are going up fast for confirmed cases, but expected that since there are people actually being tested. I don't expect to see the vaccines anytime soon, even at that it will go to the high risk folks first, which is ok.

Yeah, Dave. Get better. As far as the vaccines go, I think they might be out faster than some think. Bayer said they had 3 million tablets ready to go, so it's just a matter of distribution and so on. CDC and some of the others are playing politics with it because they didn't make the discovery that malaria medication works on it. From what rooting around I did I think it was USAMRIID at Fort Detrick (sp?) that made the initial determination. That's why the FDA has already approved it and is getting it moving.

KC has joined the shelter in place orders starting Tuesday. My county hasn't joined in yet, but the neighboring town has, which I suspect will trickle down to ours. Both my wife's work and mine were already in WFH status, so should be business as usual for our work this week, just less internal stuff for us to support with less folks working in the office.
