Do I really need to sort this?

Can I forgive hoarding self if I just sweep them into the trash bucket?
That would be my choice. Ask you self, when was the last time you needed 4-(pick a size) #6 drywall screws and went into that pile and picked them out. If the answer is I don't remember then you don't need this mess.

Thanks! I think I was just looking for confirmation. I did save off some of the bolts and nuts in the pile, but just swept most of it into the trash. I've had plastic bins of this stuff just taking up space for the last couple months in my way preventing me from doing things. Not worth saving a few cents for the next time I need a piece of hardware.

That's a real load off. Now I can get my workbench cleared off and on to the counters.

Got a bunch of coffee cans stuffed with that sort of stuff. When I need 4 or so screws and go pawing through that mess and always end up with one the right size. My thought is to just recycle the whole bunch. ( but I won't cause I'm a hoarder) Any more If I need a specific screw size or what not just buy a box of them and store the balance in appropriate box in my HF boxes. Works for me.

I had a boss that was a multimillionaire and would run to the hardware store to buy 3 screws. Of course the store sold in packages of 4 or 5. He’d argue with them until they’d sell him just the 3 he wanted, of course they’d give him the 3 and still sell him the full package to get him what he wanted

I used to think he was just that big of a cheapskate to save that penny or two, but now days I’ve begun to think he was just keeping from having a jar of screws on the shelf. ;)

It's all gone now. Too late to get it back. I did sort part of it into those multi compartment trays, so I have a good assortment. I also have a good collection of organized McFeely robertson screws I generally use and keep the stock topped up.

Going to do my best to not start any new 'misc' screw and bolt buckets and will try and put things away as I get done with a project.

On to clean off the CNC Machines!

I used to save leftover hardware and keep it in 404X700 composite cans with plastic poly caps. I personally emptied the contents from these snack canisters and washed them out for the expressed purpose of holding hardware.

I still have several cans filled with all of this indispensable hardware. I haven't emptied one out and looked for something I needed in years.

But you never know when you are going to need something.

I've got plenty of brand new screws and bolts already in perfect order.

This is the result of taking 'left overs' from various projects and just tossing in the 'sort it later bin'

Do I need to sort this last pile? Can I forgive hoarding self if I just sweep them into the trash bucket?

Arrrrrrgggg. The struggle is real.

we have drawers in our kitchen we dont call sort it later drawers, we call them for now drawers....where should I put this? just put it in the for now drawers right now, we will get to it eventually
me, Id sit and sort out any of the stuff I think I couild use, the prices have skyrocketed. I spent 2 days sorting out miscellaneous hardware of all types a few years back. and Ive used so much of it. I still have mountains of it, but its all worth saving. but only saving if its sorted and easily located when you need a specific thing.
I use alot of the old hardware when I build temp things, like sleds, or jigs, or whatever.

Reminds me of when I was a kid. My Father, a great Dad. Every day before he left for work, made a list of chores for my brothers and me that he wanted completed before he got home. Nothing we could not easily handle if we got up and got busy, we would be done early afternoon. The rest of the time was play time. One year he went to the local auto wrecking yard and bought a 5-gallon bucket of nuts, bolts, and screws. One of our tasks over several days was to separate them into some kind of order. We worked at it we thought we were being abused but in reality, he allowed us full access to use them for the crazy things we built. My Dad was very wise, and kept us busy to keep us out of trouble, but we got to do so many things that the kids in town could only dream of. I would not change a thing about my growing up. There in not a day goes by, I am now 80, that I do not miss my Dad and Mom and think of the great life they gave us growing up!
