Drones

Let me just drop this here for those in the drone buying mood. As I understand it, the ban passed the house a bit ago.
I'm going to stifle much of what I want to say due to the forum CoC and such, but if our congress critters are worried about Chinese tech and its dominance in the US market, then why are they going after drones and not smart phones?

why are they going after drones and not smart phones?

I'll just leave this here:

and kinda also throw this out there

and then just drop this on the side....

and might also note this just for fun even though it's unrelated to my comments above (but also look up where pretty much all of the bios work is done).

Like other drone user I have had concerns about what is going on within the wall of the legislature in this area and I do follow it somewhat closely. I am putting up a link not to add fuel to a fire or be political (as this whole issue is a political foot ball) but to try to add some clarification to many of the rumors.

Me again. I'm not a Youtube user, no special reason, just not in the habit. However, on the advice of those here, I did check it out and watched one beginners guide. What an eye opener. I feel certain I will reorder another one, it has many features I'm sure I'll enjoy for photo purposes. As I said before the owners manual, written in Chinese or Japanese, was of absolutely no value and, in fact, added to my confusion. One should not have to go to outside sources to learn how to use a product even though that seems to be SOP in this age of things computer driven. The only question still unknown to me is what is the correct app to download. ??? The Apple app store has several and I obviously chose the wrong one. I'll watch some more of the Youtube vids and expect to reorder another later this week. I do not like returning merchandise but in this case several hundred dollars was involved and I had to protect my self, especially with the difficulties using my bank card. Thanks y'all for the help I'll keep you informed as this saga progresses.

P.S. The reason I'm not much of a Youtube user is because I have found it to be addictive. The last time I used it before this drone drama I watched a Bruce Lee vid, then another, then another, then........after four hours I finally broke away.🥴

Fascinating but still impractical. Looks like fun, but only 20 min fly time and less than 20 mile range (at top speed) before you fall out of the sky? Still needs some work. Someday battery technology will catch up to our hopes and then all the poor drivers we now encounter in two dimensions will stun us with their incompetence in three.

Frank you need to down load the DJI FLY app. Try going to dji.com and then the support tab. From there it will lead you to the DJI Fly app you need

I'm looking at getting one if the DJI drones (because frankly they are dang good drones)..

I will say with a huge degree of confidence that there is ZERO less than ZERO chance I will side load their app onto any cell phone I give the slightest two hoots about what's on it. I would NEVER load it onto a cell phone I had tied to any email, banking, cell auth, etc..

In fact I'm looking primarily at getting their controller mostly so I do not have to download their app (plus it's massively less of a hassle from everyone I've talked to who used both - plus you get a bigger screen than a stock cell although you could use a cheap tablet).

The fact that the app has to be downloaded directly and was rejected from the play store with no explanation except platitudes and unspecified "incompatibilities" (i.e. I'm reading that as it completely failed the security review) is a massive MASSIVE red flag for me.

Do I have trust issues? yes... yes I do..
Do I load all sorts of other apps on my cell? No. No I do not.
Why? I've worked in computers a long time, this stuff is all dodgy and poorly written at best, outright malicious at worst (I read a lot of computer security articles.. it's.. yeah.. well.. yeah..).

I would NEVER load it onto a cell phone
Neither would I although lots of people do. dji makes some drones that don't have built in screen on the controller and if I got one of those I would spend 50-100 bucks and buy a dedicated tablet to use with it. the mini 2 and the mini 4k come to mind. Nice drone lower cost units.

My saga marches on. I took the step and ordered another mini 2. This one with the extra battery combo pack. Several of the You Tube vids I watched said the advertised 31 minute life of their battery was overly optimistic. One said 21 min. was more realistic, another said only 18. I'd hate to be stuck with a dead battery when I come across another neat photo opportunity. Upgrading purchase plus buying a 256 gb Sd card put my cost way beyond what I had previously budgeted. Oh well. Anyhow, the YT vids have been a great help. I had previously used YT only for very occasional entertainment but will now check it more frequently for problem solving assistance. Anyhow, the question of getting the right app remains. An Apple app store search brought up 26 apps. Several could be eliminated as being specific for models other than the mini 2. There were about a half dozen simply labeled "DJI Fly". I chose the first one because the image looked like the ones I saw in some of the YT vids. My new drone should be here tomorrow or Tuesday. BTW, my son said he has a mini 2 and it's owners manual is written in English, not Chinese that came with my first one.
