exotics, where can I get them here on east coast

Ive been searching for a place that sells exotic species by board foot, not packs or mixed assortments.
I purchase now from ocooch hardwoods but its usually just 2 foot pieces.
anyone know of someone I might have missed on east coast from conn down to virginia and as far west of mid pa......I want to purchase board feet of exotics so I dont have to spend a fortune of shorts.
 
You might try West Penn Hardwoods. They are in North Carolina. I have done a lot of business with them over the years. Expensive as you might expect when it comes to hardwoods. They are located in Conover, N.C. not too far off I-40 and just west of the I-40 and I-77 interchange.

They are open 6 days per week and have a retail business in addition to mail order. You are allowed to walk through their warehouse and select the boards you want.

You can order from the website but you will not see pictures of the individual boards they are selling. There will be a general picture of the specific timber. What you receive will be a piece of that timber but not necessarily better or worse than what is pictured. Better to shop in person so you can select what you like. Of course, shopping in person has its disadvantages in that you might end up with a lot of wood because their warehouse is like going to a candy store.

M L Condon Lumber in White Plains, NY is where I was buying what I needed before moving South to NC. They had a warehouse less than a mile from where I lived before moving here. They didn't stock everything at this warehouse, but the guys there were easy to work with. I could tell them what I wanted in the morning and it would be on the afternoon truck to the warehouse for me, so same day delivery. Full length 10-12' boards, usually, but they would send shorter lengths if I requested. I bought quite a bit of real mahogany from them. They may not carry every exotic wood, but always had everything that I asked for.

I used to buy boatloads of wood from rosenzweig lumber in the Bronx who is comparable with condon in white plains
Shipping was too much so I switched to Robert's plywood in deer park who delivers for free for 500 dollar order
I usually order once or twice a year from them and have no problem with 500 bucks
I'll look into the morth Carolina yard
 
I go to Rugby in Avon Ma. Used to be able to hand sort in the warehouse before Covid. Now the warehouse is employees only. You order what you want at the counter and a worker brings it out for you.

Really good lumber.

Before Covid they would put skids of cool stuff in middle of warehouse for you to pick from. Bubiga, cocobolo, rosewoods Slabs, turners blanks ------ No more, - order at counter and it gets brought to you
 
I also forgot to mention Got Wood down in South Carolina. I have been doing business with them for several years and they have expanded their selection of materials. I do a lot of turning and they are one of the few companies that offer kiln dried exotics. They come at a premium but if time is money it sure beats waiting on a piece of exotic wood to dry and hoping and praying that it will not crack during the process.

They do specialize in turning blanks but offer a lot of other wood including short boards and specials that always get my attention.

They have free shipping on orders over $249 and the best customer service. I recently had a defect in a piece of wood from Got Wood and they sent a replacement in a couple of days at no charge. People like that get my business. Nice people to deal with.

I don't see any yard charging less that would steer me in their direction over a few places I order from now like ocooch hardwoods
Doing intarsia might use small pieces but grain direction and different shapes use a lot more then people see

Not so much "Exotic Wood", but sized more for small projects and scroll saw work, I buy from Richards Craft Woods in Clemmons, NC. In my last order I bought some Flame Box Elder to make a jewelry box for my adult grand daughter.

Richard always has a booth in the Klingspore Extravaganza that's held every Fall in the Hickory, NC Convention Center, but he ships packages of wood year round. His website photos will give you a pretty good idea of the packages and sizes. Klingspore Woodworking is a woodworker's tools and supply store with 3 stores in the Central and West NC area.
