Gilding project starting

Very ornate
This will take a while.
The white chairs had the same motif as the mirror before stripping and prep.

LOML had some gold gilding lessons and made some projects at the art restoration school, and she always says that the result lies on a very good preparation, no shortcuts, no skipping steps. Bad preparation and you'll throw that gold down the drain and leave the piece made a mess...

Very true Toni. This is "The" very last Appalachian. There are no masters, we are always practicing our trade at this point.
I was 1st introduced to gilding in the late 70s. Mainly oil sizing but have practice in water gilding, and did very well.
This customer is asking for oil sizing.

Finally getting back to these chairs and mirror. A lot of detail undercoat painting. The black will remain black.

Getting there , couple minor spots left then black touch up. Books of gold, 25 leaves in a book 20 books in a box. This chair took 7.5 books.
