This is Big Toe Pain

I went to the foot doctor because I have some pretty intense pain in my big toe.
I guess it's pretty common

I have been researching the internet on Halux Rigidus as well as different shoes
Lots of information - Lots of choices of shoes

I will going out to some shoe stores later to try on some shoes.

What I want to know is

Does anyone here have this ailment?
Does anyone here have experience with shoes that they like?

No recommendations on shoes, but never underestimate the value of some good gel inserts. I was about to throw out my current work boots as my feet and knees ached after a day of wearing them. Not been the case with the latest inserts.

The sole needs to be stiff - dis allowing the toes to curl when walking.

I have beautiful cushioned Sketchers VERY very comfortable, but my toe can curl.
I can get an insert to stiffed the sole.

My doctor talked about a shoe like this one

I am just wondering what some others have found to be comfortable and effective with their own experience.

If the problem is that you curl your toes when walking, there are those silicon pads that one puts under the toes to prevent curling them.
Here they are called coloquially "mice"

That is interesting and worth looking into

The problem with Halux Rigiditus is that after some time - years - the cartilage in the joint get worn away and the ball and socket of the joint gets destroyed. Bone to bone contact then wears and the joint becomes not longer effective. The bone to bone causes the pain. It can never get better.

Yesterday I wore my boots that I use in the snow in winter all day. The sole is rigid and kept my foot pretty much flat all day. The boots are somewhat comfortable, but I would not want to go for a long walk.

The best shoes have a rigid sole with a large toe box that does not bend and allow toe the normal curl. The bottom of the shoe is curled to allow the curl while walking and keeps the foot and toe flat with minimal movement of the toes.

The doctor said the wooden Dutch Clogs would be ideal, but not practical.

I was hoping someone here had helux Rigidus (NOT REALLY HOPING THAT), but if there was someone here that found shoes that they liked they would share the experience.

Lots of nice information given. I will go to a couple of shoe stores to find something I like, then shop for best price. In the meantime I will wear my boots. They aew not horrible.

I got a cortizone shot in the toe joint on Monday - wow did that HURT. Today my toe is not bad at all. I still feel it, but I can walk, almost normal.

I don't have a lot of problems with my feet, but do have a little nephropathy (I think) ... every so often I will get a twinge that feels like some one hooked an electric shock machine to my little toe on my left foot that will arc across the ends of all my toes... have same sensation in my thigh inside just above my knee.... that may be related to the internal bleeding I had last June that put me in hospital for a week. Sure was a pretty shade of purple from the crotch to the calf on the inside of my leg and from the hip to the knee on the outside.

I've smashed the big toe on that foot three times in my life and have had to re-grow the big toe nail each time. In's 1985 or 86, I dropped a down hole gun on it an cracked the bone in about 5 places, split the toe along the inside nail from the last joint to the end of the toe and had to wear my house shoe to work for about a month. Last time I lost that nail, I slipped off the hill just behind the house when I was mowing and my foot went under the lawn mower... took off the top of my shoe and half the nail, without doing any more damage to the toe, but ruined a perfectly good pair of undershorts....
Also dropped a milk crock on my right big toe when I was about 2... it split the nail into 3 sections and has been like that for the last 79 years...

That's funny, Vaughn. Reminds me of a movie I recently watched called "Marabunta: Killer Ants". Not making light of Leo's problem. Sounds painful. Luckily the only pain I ever have with my big toes is whenever I stupidly drop a lathe chuck on my foot. ARG!!!

I ordered a set of Keen hiking shoes the other day. I’ve been wearing them all weekend, pretty comfortable. Even walked through the stream with them, stayed dry inside. I may order some of their work boots next.
