Hand Tool Cabinet

I like the look of the convex, but concave looks like it'd give you more usable horizontal desk/bench space. The caveat is that you run the risk of having that horizontal space fill up with stuff (like most of us do), impeding access to the drawers.

Decided to sketch what I was thinking on a pic of the cabinet to make sure it was all blending. I was a bit concerned the curve wasn’t going to work in the overall design, and still not decided. I think it would look nice, but just a straight area would work too. The plane til will be movable and on the French cleat system.

I am thinking of replacing the top 4 drawers with some vertical slide outs for hand tools I’ll use while at the table.

Three of those will get resized and relocated to the bottom left area.

Next to those I’ll have storage spots for shooting boards and such.

I started out with just the upper shelf and some supports to see how it would look.

I’m actually thinking about going with this, I’ll do some dadoes in the shelf for the supports. I’ll space so that all three openings are the same width, but can then build inserts for each as I get time.

I’ll mill out some strips for the french cleats this week and finish up the plane til with some separation strips. I’ll only be keeping about half the planes on the til, I have several duplicates I’ve picked up over the years.

Tonight I cut down some oak strips and attached them to separate the planes on the plane til. Probably will add a few thin strips to raise the planes up so the blades can be left out.

I got the shelf partially assembled, will attach it with screws once it’s been sanded and finished.

Still need to cut material for the French cleats and attach them.

Went ahead and installed the back and side cleats tonight. The front left side needs a cover made to cover the lighting wires, which is why they stop short of the front.

Thinking about doing additional cleats in the lower area out from the shelf too. Each space below the the shelf on each side are pigeon holes, so wouldn’t be blocking drawers in those areas.

Also did a little old school drafting using the drawing box I built as a senior in HS. It stores nicely in the lower shelf area.

Things are still a bit tacky, but went ahead and re installed the shelf.

I added a strip of UHMW tape to the bottom of the plane tile to make it easier to slide back and forth. There will be some items stored behind it that I don’t use as often.

I also milled out a cover for the electrical cables to the lights. I stained it in place, and didn’t realize it had a streak of sapwood, so will mill out another at some point.

Will let the poly harden for a few days before I do much else.

I haven't decided on the four vertical pull-outs, but those were just holes in the drawer fronts to pull them out. I'm thinking I may replace the drawer fronts on the lower two drawers directly under those as the grain would probably run differently. I may try to book match something to look a bit more uniform there.

Threw this together for a set of my dad’s chisels, not sure he used them at all, at least much.

I was going for some thing I can grab and take to the bench. May redo the the magnet porting to make recesses for the chisels so they do slide to the sides, the magnets hold them pretty well.

Also got it sanded down and some stain on it. I will rattle can poly it this week.
