Happened upon this neat little trick for sale on Amazon. It is an attachment for a 4 1/2" grinder with a 5/8"x11 spindle.
It is an adapter that provides a 1/4" collet and a 1/8" collet for your grinder. It screws onto the spindle and then allows you insert either the 1/4" collet or the 1/8" collet so that you can use the grinder for carving and sanding jobs as long as the attachments fit in one of the two collets. The nut snugs right up on the collet and it comes with two wrenches to do the snugging.
So far I have used it for sanding with my 2" and 3" hook and loop sanding pads and discs. I also tried it with some sanding stars mounted on a 1/4" shaft. It works quite well and provides some oomph to my sanding arsenal. I have a couple of long sanding extensions that fit into the 1/4" collet so it should be an asset for some jobs that I find difficult to sand. I tried it on my cheap 4 1/2" variable speed angle grinder to sand a couple of bowls and it worked like a charm. It took a bit of getting use to but the more powerful grinder had no issues sanding despite the pressure I was applying. I don't think I want to use it at full speed as it might sand right through thinner projects in a blink of the eye.
Next batch of knives I make will also test its value.
Not too expensive at less than $10. Might be worth considering adding to your accessory box for the angle grinder.
